JOHANNESBURG: Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore hailed an “incredible” performance by South Africa's pace attack after his team were bundled out for a record low of 49 on the second day of the first Test at the Wanderers.

“I've never seen two hours of relentless, incredible pace bowling such as I have witnessed today,” said Whatmore.

Dale Steyn was the main destroyer, taking six for eight in 8.1 overs as Pakistan slipped below their previous lowest total of 53 against Australia in Sharjah in 2002/03.

South Africa did not enforce the follow on and took command of the match, posting 207 for three in their second innings to take an overall lead of 411 into the third day.

Captain Graeme Smith (52), Hashim Amla (50 not out) and AB de Villiers (63 not out) hit half-centuries.

“Most of our batsmen got out to terrific balls,” said Whatmore. “I'm very disappointed with the result but you really need to give credit to the opposition. It wasn't an easy wicket by any means but the way they bowled was incredible.”

Steyn said a pep talk by Smith before play had fired up the South African players, who had been bowled out for 253 on the first day.

Whatmore said that although Pakistan had bowled out South Africa relatively cheaply he knew that it would be a difficult day for his team.

“Personally I thought (South Africa's) 253 was not a bad score given the conditions of that pitch and knowing what the South African bowlers can do,” he said.

Asked whether he thought the pitch was too difficult for the second day of a Test match, Whatmore responded: “It looked that.”

Commenting on Misbah-ul-Haq’s dismissal, Whatmore said the review decisions were “part and parcel” of the game.

“I'm not going to comment on that. Any comments will be done in the right channels,” he said.

The Pakistani captain was given out on review after Bowden turned down an appeal, although “hot spot” evidence showed only the faintest, momentary touch.

My respected coach.Your job is to prepare your team to face hostile ,bouncy and swing bowling.Everbody knows that they have world class players. You are failed in your duty.Pakistan badly need good quality batting coach.Who can teach our batsmen how to handle bouncy and swing ball. Also need good psychologist to strengthen players mental capabilities. Our analyst should study the weakness and strength of opposing players along with coaches. Now it is the duty of coaches to prepare our bowlers and batsmen in nets to implement. our captain and players duty is apply this in letter and sprit in match.if any player is deviating from plan should be held accountable and after couple of warning drop from the team.

Their bowling was just regular. Our batting lacks skills. And we will not have those skills unless our land is safe in the eyes of the world. What are the chances for that? Almost nil.

Why do we keep on blowing the bugles of our Indian win?? That was a win in ODI. It was a fluke. The fact is that we are perpetually psychologically depressed people. Our PCB has no say in the world affairs of the cricket. Even IPL shuns us like we don't exist. No team wants to visit us. We are isolated people. Our morale is all time low. It is a different story that we are shrewd in putting up a brave face. But brave faces don't win matches. Skills do.

Agreed. Pak pace is promising. But her batting is abysmal. And even pace is not as good as our opposition. We people always have psychological blocks. We hit low so easily.

The problem is that PCB is bankrupt.

It is all the same. The players who did not get the chance, we cite their absence. The fact is that we play very little international cricket. And you know the reason why. No teams are willing to visit Pakistan. It is our own doing.

I agree. Our Pakistani team is only blessed with too much ego and little skill, too much arrogant talks and little humility.

I am not sure why selectors and PCB always chooses to disturb the winning settled combination in Test matches. They were playing with set team for 2 years 6 months and all of sudden they drop bunch of players. Now they don't have Aizaz Cheema,Abdur Rahman,Tanvir Ahmed,Adnan Akmal,Umar Akmal.Playing Sarfaraz Ahmad means playing with one batsman short.Cannot afford in South Africa condition.

Dear sir, Few weeks ago I had mentioned on this forum that the pakistani batting line will challenge lowest ever batting record in South Africa . More appalling is the form of veteran like yunis khan whoboasts batting average inexcess of 50 runs per innings. Pakistan under 19 had toured south africa in recent past and Babar Azam was stand out batsman but he is not even considered and instead same old tried and failed Imran Farhat and Faisal Iqbal got the nod. I reckon the worst is yet to come from tuk tuk and co. Regards, Hyder

praise the opposition when you haven't done your job...thats what is sounds like to me, leaving home quality batsmen and taking irfan but playing sifarshi rahat ali !?...when we have the likes of Wahab Riaz, Anwar Ali waiting to serve on first opportunity.

Ignominy of 49 - Sack the coach before he ensures that ICC takes back Test Status from Pakistan Bring back Mohsin Hassan Khan as head coach of Pakistan cricket team The nation demands from Mr. Zaka Ashraf, Chairman PCB to immediately sack this much hyped professional coach of Pakistani cricket team Dav Whatmore, for being directly responsible of the ever declining standards of team's batting, wherein, today our cricket team got out in the 1st innings of the 1st Test match, against South African cricket team, on the lowest ever Test score of just 49 runs. In fact, today the 2nd February 2013, will be remembered as the BLACK DAY of Pakistan cricket. It is seriously apprehended that if PCB persists with Dav Whatmore any further, soon our team's Test status, may not be revoked by the ICC. As such, in the larger national interest, the countrymen are fully justified in demanding immediate appointment of Mr. Mohsin Hassan Khan (who lately proved with results, to be the most successful coach in the cricketing history of Pakistan), as head coach of Pakistan cricket team. Moreover, he should be advised to take over the charge of his job in South Africa, as soon as possible. In case MHK is not available for any reasons whatsoever, either Mr. Wasim Bari or Mr. Abdul Qadir, fully deserves to be appointed, as head coach of Pakistan cricket team.

Fantastic! Wonderful! Exhilarating! Pakistan never seems to be out of making headline news, no matter how hard they try not to. This is what happens when you are suffering from a mental block of publicity hype brought on by the media and a superiority complex after a few matches. Haaahh! What a farce and a good laugh I had. Also, I was not surprised because these fellows are unable to play on bouncy and fast wickets of Australia. SOLUTION: If Pakistani soil is soft and gets easily affected, then with all the money PCB has, find a way to garden hard wickets conditions. Salams

I think nobody can denied that SA has best fast bowlers of the world.I failed to understand that why Pakistan has not prepared our batsmen for bouncy and swinging condition. This not the first time. whenever they come across this type of wicket in Australia,England,NZ or WI.The results are the same.We should learn from the English cricket management and coaches. After the series loss to Pakistan in Abu Dhabi,They worked on their batsmen how to play spinners on turning wicket. We have seen the result. They beat India in India. This Kind of approach Pakistan should have adopt.

Pakistan lost a 5 day match in two hours says a lot about the resilience and panic stricken nature of the team.. Spineless and hopeless as professionals.

The bowling was awesome...it was not speed ...they bowled at a moderate pace between 125-135 kmph..but it was line & length, and accuracy...

Good call by Akmal's by keeping out of the team. Must feel go to join or stay out at will. However, as long as the Akmal brothers are out, I am fine with losing.

5 years later, Pakistan still playing without batting coach. You can't expect any better when playing tests after 6 months. Only positive we may see is bundling out SA within 150 when the pace selection is fair. Irfan should have played because there was never going to be a 5 days test so why worry about his fitness for 5 days.

Hope PCB and Pakistani supporters learn their lesson here on DRS -- the same old umpiring bias (human error) of 1980 is manifesting itself in form of technology mistakes (read: bias) -- this is exactly why BCCI is rightly opposing DRS -- Pakistan should get over its permanent anti-India agenda, and do the right thing: oppose DRS.

well I am not surprised at all.... in one of the previouse columns I commented that if Pakistan could cross 150 in any of the six innings it would be an achievement itself..... I was bombarded by my passionate countrymen .Hafeez, Younis never had a good technique. Espcially Mr.Proffessor who can produce edges regularly on dead pitches is badly exposed.Had the batsmen arrived early and played afew more side games it would have been a different display. 3-0 writing on the wall.

No matter what, I have never put my money on Pakistan batsmen. Pitch of Johannesburg and SA pace attack is far too good for Pakistan to cope. Even the so called great batsmen of yester years have disappointed far too many times on foreign soils. Most of the successes that have come Pakistan way have been, due to the brilliance of the bowlers. As a Test Captain, Misbah has done whatever he could but, basic flaws in batting technique of our players, cry out loud, when it comes to batting as always, a lot remains to be desired.

well Dave if this is the first time you've seen what a truly world class bowling attack is all about then I guess you haven't been venturing out in the field much, lately. But I guess not much your fault since you're being fed the home grown self-hyped myth based folklores about how great the Pak bowling attack is and what a bunch of talented lads the Pak team is made up of. Time for myths to break apart and reality to sink in!

Excellent lethal bowling by the South Africans indeed. Pakistan need to gather themselves and come back with a vengence. This match is not over yet.
