JOHANNESBURG: Dale Steyn sent Pakistan crashing to a new low as South Africa took control on the second day of the first Test at the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday.

First day report |   South Africa – Pakistan’s real nemesis  |  Pakistani batsmen need to stand tall at the Bullring  |  Jamshed has ‘all the shots’: Misbah  |  An American’s attempt to understand cricket |

Steyn took six for eight in 8.1 overs as Pakistan were shot out for 49, four fewer than their previous lowest total of 53 against Australia in Sharjah in 2002/03.

South Africa led by 204 runs on the first innings but decided not to enforce the follow on.

The hosts were 207 for three in their second innings at the close, an overall lead of 411, with Graeme Smith (52), Hashim Amla (50 not out) and AB de Villiers (63 not out) hitting half-centuries.

It was another triumph for South Africa's barrage of fast bowlers and the third time in less than two seasons that the world's number one Test team had bowled out opponents for less than 50.

Australia were routed out for 47 in 2011/12 and New Zealand were dismissed for 45 earlier this season. Both matches were in Cape Town.

AB de Villiers equalled the South African wicketkeeping record by holding six catches and there were three catches in the slips as the Pakistan batsmen failed to cope with top quality bowling on a pitch with steep and sometimes variable bounce as well as some sideways movement.

Vernon Philander took two for 16 and Jacques Kallis two for 11.

Azhar Ali (13) and captain Misbah-ul-Haq (12) were the only Pakistan batsmen to reach double figures.

Steyn was outstanding, bowling at high pace and making the ball move away disconcertingly from the right-handed batsmen. He started Pakistan's collapse by taking three wickets in 14 balls at the start of the day and followed up with three more in 12 deliveries to wrap up the innings soon after lunch.

Steyn struck with his fifth ball of the day after Pakistan resumed at six for no wicket, having Mohammad Hafeez caught behind for six, edging an out-swinger.

In his next over Steyn trapped new cap Nasir Jamshed leg before wicket when the left-hander went back on his stumps against a full delivery.

Jamshed, who had survived in the previous over when Philander unsuccessfully sought a review of umpire Bruce Oxenford's not out decision, was himself the victim of a failed review after being given out by umpire Billy Bowden.

Five balls later Steyn claimed the key wicket of Younis Khan, caught at first slip when he edged a perfect out-swinger.

Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq survived for more than an hour before Kallis claimed two wickets in three balls, having both batsmen caught behind.

Misbah was given out on review after Bowden turned down an appeal, although hot spot evidence showed only the faintest, momentary touch.

Philander, after bowling four maiden overs at the start of play, came back to dismiss Asad Shafiq and Umar Gul within three balls as Pakistan lurched to lunch at 40 for seven.

Steyn struck twice in the first over after lunch but Junaid Khan edged and slogged two boundaries off Philander before Steyn had Rahat Ali caught at third slip.

Batting conditions remained difficult at the start of South Africa's second innings but Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen put on 82 for the first wicket.

Three wickets fell in quick succession before Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers pressed home South Africa's advantage with an enterprising unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 108.

Pakistan's hall of shame

Remove the so called renowned coach. The players are doing whatever they were. Irfan should have been in the team. All the rest os fine. Keep Akmal's out pleaaaaase. Do not fall for their collective smart move by skipping this tour.

No, I disagree. We should make our pitches to support the bowling of Hafeez, Ajmal & Co to make SA, Aus and UK batsmen look comical chasing the spinning ball.

As a South African, the Pakistan team cant be too dissapointed, all the other test playing teams would habe struggled to get to 100 with Steyn bowling SO well. He looked like taking a ball with every ball. We should all just admire his skill, makes cricket a pleasure to watch, even if i am saying this as a SA supporter

This devastation is directly related to favoritism in selecting players. When qualified players are ignored and PAWAA players are in, this is what happens then. I bet you the same results in the next matches as well. It’s never too late to learn from your mistake. Please don’t disgrace Pakistan anymore. It’s enough. Choose what’s best for Pakistan not for YOU Mr. Selector (s).

Pakistan team lack mental toughness. Batting collapse is usually sign of weak minds. specially when there are no other factors (like weather etc) in play.

You are absolutely right. It is very disappointing. Shame on Dawn for letting rabid nationalistic sentiments and politics be allowed in cricketing forum while disallowing anything that seeks redress. I'm afraid this may be simply a reflection of overall Pakistani society, being overprotective of fragile sentiments and narratives.

It is not disgrace. Even Australia,England,NZ,WI,India has suffered at the hand of SA. I blamed the coaches and players to some extent for this poor performance. Coaches have not prepared batsmen for bouncy wicket. Batsmen should also be blamed because they have seen the fate of NZ batsmen, they should have worked hard.I think management and players are complacent after the victory in India.

Let's make India's Rahul Dravid or Australia's Ricky Pointing our batting coach, atleast we will be saved from the ignominy of such disgraceful performances.

Congratulations to PCB and Pakistan Team on "improving" their own record !!! somebody's got to do it. Instead of praising SA bowling, how about fixing your bowlers and do that job you get paid for, Mohammad Akram !!!

Why should the Pakistan nation be grateful for a commercial decision, purely based on the needs of a crowd which paid for 5 days of cricket?

Nothing to feel ashamed for. It is still better than 10 or 20. Next time, we will have a dubious distinction of beating our own low of 49. We promise you that we will beat it in the next innings by capturing the unheard score of 1/all out. No team in the world will be able to beat that. We will be the new champs.

Pakistan should have attacked the SA bowling. This might have saved them for being bundled out for their lowest score of 49

Dinesh my friend thanks for your support and words of encouragement. But seriously Pakistan has been playing on slow pitches, this is a new experience we need time to adjust to bouncy pitches and swing. We need to adjust fast.

Misbah is a strange character. One cab do a full fledge research on this guy. In ODIs he plays like if he is playing a test match (resulting ultimately in a defeat), while in test matches he scores less than ODIs.

PCB is full of SHAMELESS individuals who compromise national pride to their own interests, and so are YOUNIS & MISBAH, both pathetic, incompetent and never delivered when needed. PILLARS OF SHAME. People who are/were praising Misbah and Younis for their records on dead tracks should be ashamed for advocating the importance of these sore losers to a national side. Nothing personal but I hate to see Younis having chewing gum in his mouth and Misbah's smile for failing to be up to the task. What the heck they are doing in the team, they are too old and unprofessional to be part of any cricketing team, and the entire nation is let down by these fellows. All they do is under perform, drop catches and make silly faces after beaten out side off stump. Any street club level cricketer can be out there and get a ZERO...BIG DEAL (requires no talent but approach or connections in PCB). For GOD"S SAKE, we don't need these BIG GUNS. I rather chose Afridi, Kamran brothers, Razaq who at least have a fighting spirit, attitude and will to perform for the nation's pride. I want to see what comments come from inept PCB officials after this poor pathetic performance. Shame on them for this performance and PCB for selecting old machines with no fuel to run. I will like to see the likes of Afridi, Razaq, Akmal brothers playing at all levels rather having 30+ SENIORS GUNS WITH NO FIRE POWER. Please send there a club level team, am sure they will also be able to score 49 odd runs.

As I said earlier ( 2 days ago), Pakistan may succumb to the bowling of the best fast bowling attack of South Africa. The result is out in a day and a half with the batting collapse of Pakistan. It is deemed for a doom loss in either three or three and a half days.

Pakistan: 49 all out: A spell of seven consecutive maidens - and 47 balls without a run from the bat - showed just how difficult the South African syllabus can be. Zionist conspiracy !!!

Horrible show up put up by our players by getting out 49 allout. Even there was no rotation of strike. South Africa batted well in these conditions with tempramen which our batsmen lacked. Pakistan never bothered to improve its fragile batting. Bowling alone does not win matches as batting has to be strong too. Wining and losing is no problem as long there is strong fight back and great effort. Sadly it is not in our team. Pakistan needs a good batting coach and practice on boucny tracks. In second innings our team must alteast must put better show in batting if it has to perform in South Africa.

There is nothing to be dissapoint about Pak batting. It was such a bouncy pitch and accurate bowlers of SA. Had India played today, they would have got out for 35-40 runs.

When india visited SA earlier, it was comprehensively defeated.although it managed to save face due to heroics of rahul dravid. The main reason why SA does so well is all of their bowlers are capable of taking 6-7 wickets per innings. However, it was morne morkel who was more dangerous.

I used to visit the Dawn website quite often to get the Pakistani perspective on Paki news or current world events, but have noticed more and more that Dawn readers can no longer comment on all news stories. It seems that Dawn has become too chicken to allow readers to comment on the wide variety of news articles on your website, unless of course it is sports related. Why are comments closed so often?

Pakistani batsmen in general have always struggled on non-Asian pitches. Their 'batting consultant' before the series was Inzimam-ul-Haq, everyone knows how he fared on these pitches.

PAK should not be ashamed of this performance. after all, they did not practise enough and this was bound to happen. in fact, they should be happy that their bowlers did a good job despite not practising enough. PAK can hope to do very well, much better and match-winning by the time the third test begins.

Don't compare with the current out-of-form Indian team. The same team had leveled series in SA earlier when they were in-form. The current in-form (they were called before this series) Pakistan team is pathetic. It is a bunch of club cricketers, especially batsmen
