KARACHI: Pakistani movie distributors and television stations are boycotting an Oscar-nominated film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden and popular US dramas to avoid offending sensibilities or sparking a violent backlash.

Pakistan may have a starring role in Kathryn Bigelow's “Zero Dark Thirty”, which dramatises the 10-year CIA hunt for the 9/11 mastermind, but local cinemas are steering clear of a film they say could make people feel humiliated.

Similarly, a local cable distributor is blocking transmission of the smash hit dramas “Homeland”, starring Claire Danes, and “Last Resort” on the grounds they are against national interest.

The boycotts are the latest form of unofficial censorship in Pakistan, where YouTube has been blocked for four months over a trailer for the anti-Islam film, “Innocence of Muslims”.

“Zero Dark Thirty” has topped the box office charts in the US and earned five Oscar nods. But in Pakistan, the raid to kill bin Laden is considered one of the blacker incidents in the country's history.

A US Navy SEAL team killed the Al Qaeda chief in his hideout less than a mile from Pakistan's premier military academy on May 2, 2011 in Abbottabad.

“We have not and neither has anyone else bought Zero Dark Thirty,” said Mohsin Yaseen, a representative for film distribution company Cinepax.

He described the film as “pro-American”, despite controversy in the US over its depictions of so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques,” widely seen as torture.

“It has several scenes which could make us feel humiliated. It is against the interests of the Pakistani nation,” said Yaseen.

The chairman of the Film Censors Board told AFP it had not reviewed “Zero Dark Thirty” because there had been no request to do so.

In 2010 censors banned Indian Bollywood comedy “Tere bin Laden”, which poked fun at the Al Qaeda leader, on the grounds that it could incite violent backlash and terrorist attacks.

Max Media, which has the rights in Pakistan to cable channel Star World, is refusing to transmit “Homeland” and military drama “Last Resort”.

While “Last Resort” features US nuclear strikes on Pakistan, the country is referred to only briefly in “Homeland”, which stars Damian Lewis as a US Marine who is also a suspected Al Qaeda agent.

“We strongly believe that programmes such as 'Homeland' and 'Last Resort' are against our national interest, cultural values and ideology,” said an official at Max Media who did not want to be named.

He said the programmes were suspended in keeping with a code of conduct from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (Pemra) and warned that even “a vague reference about Islam can ignite violence in Pakistan”.

But a thriving trade in pirated DVDs allows Pakistanis to watch whatever they want in the privacy of their homes and “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Homeland” and “Last Resort” are big sellers.

“We do not have any threats or concerns, nor has any one stopped us from selling these DVDs,” said a salesman at one popular DVD shop in Islamabad.

Look, what Osama brought to Pakistan and Afghanistan ,a great contribution and gifts so these nations and generations to come will have to pay back to his contributions and the gifts so dearly,I wonder if these nations will ever get out under the heavy yoke he had put upon them. And the good name of Islam, the whole world shudder at the very mention of it now.The whole Muslim world is falling apart.Asia, Africa, Arab.

ajit, you just contradicted yourself; you want people to think on the basis of rationality without an evidence? Maybe that post had no supporting evidence; not only me but in fact many people would like to know, if you can depict some concrete grounds the OSAMA did died in Pakistan? In this contemporary world, not even people in fact courts take decisions in empirical evidence. I am astonished, the way you presented this biased comment. And just for your reference, language has no influence on your intelligence. In the era of stone age there was no English; but still they gave you basic tools ?

I can understand why they aren't showing it. The topic of the film is at least embarrassing for a lot of Pakistanis. I don't believe many people would've watched it at the cinema. However, I think some people will watch it at home. It's much easier to consume something embarrassing in private. The report, however, shows everything through the lens of 'censorship'. Whoever wrote this report forgot that people might not actually want to watch such movies at the cinema, and hence there is not much demand for the film. It's become fashionable to show Pakistan as a fundamentally repressive society.

You used good examples to illustrate your point, but there is flaws in your argument. by the way moon lander (and rover) has taken pictures and rocks for scientific research (which been accessed by many international researchers till date). While in OBL's drama, no pics or DNA available to support or assess that event. Aurangzaib is still liked or hated by people, there is no question on his existence from either side; whereas in OBL case his presence in that compound is claimed by american but it denied by Pakistanis. You have to extract parallels from your examples to prove the common sense in this case, where basic things -like pics and DNA- been kept suspiciously secret. This unnecessary suspicious behaviour arouse my common sense to question the event. .

Couldn't agree with you more. I don't know what it is with South Asians that draw inspiration from ostriches and hide their heads in the sands of reality when it comes to civilisational, social, geographical, historical, ethical and many other truths. They seem to figure that if certain truths are denied, loud enough, long enough and in numbers, then these truths would somehow go away. I am personally extremely pessimistic about the prognosis for that part of the world where people would kill under various frivolous pretexts, rather than endorse humanity and fraternity.

I don't suppose the eye witness testimony of OBL's wives/children who watched him die are considered "proof"? One thing that conspiracy theorist have in common - they go to extraordinary lengths to ignore mountains of evidence.

He means that in Pakistan, generally English speaking people have got their enough education that they can speak their own language and also English. General population speaks their native language but some educated ones can speak more than one. And some really educated can speak common language of love and respect. In US, people who speak English are just educated in one language but those who can speak more than one are respected more, they are more wise as they have ability to understand more than one culture. This is what he means, but as you guys are radiclalized against west, your first thought and hence reaction was like they way you replied.

You see? You ban something, a book, a movie, a cartoon or a painting, it gets multimillion dollars worth publicity and makes a writer, film maker an over night celebrity.

It seems that most readers here think that the United States Government has a hand in producing this movie or any other TV program or movies that are being discussed here! Let me take the liberty to inform you that these movies are produced by independent production companies that have no affiliation with the U.S. government. Zero dark Thirty is a movie depicting an important event with some facts and some fiction. There is no conspiracy here. The freedom of speech & expression allows producers and production companies, without any government involvement, to produce anything they wish to produce. There is no government agency in the United States that monitors film and TV productions. So what an individual or a company produces should not reflect on the United States government. Akram, How did the Polio campaigners become villain in the whole story? Are justifying them who are targeting the Polio workers just because one of them took oral swabs of the kids living in that compound. The Polio campaign is intended to help the kids and the nation is longer goals. The ones who have been killed had nothing to do with the OBL raid, ever tried asking the killers why they r targeting them?

Are they not the best source who will be able to tell the truth?? Ever tried to find out what was there version and what were they doing there....were they citizens of pakistan? did they have valid visa, if yes who issued those visas? Why did govt of Pakistan not launch a legal suite against the raid or at least make the public aware of the reality. you have evidence in your home yet you ask the world to expose it for you.

Absolutely true and well said. Later in history people will realize that OBL (who was from a brotherly muslim country where no pakistani is allowed to marry their women, own property and has no rights as that of their own citizens) was the sole reason for the down turn in the fortunes of Pakistan. If you trace back in to time, the downfall of Pakistan can be pinpointed to the time when he entered Afghanistan.

OK Point taken, By being educated he meant those people who would think rationally and use logic. The govt of Pakistan instituted a committee to go in to the whole episode. They have filed their report which should have been made public. 'Allegedly' OBL's wife and kids were the only live witness to the whole thing. Bring them in full public view and make a statement. Why are you all been kept in the dark? The whole world knows this as a fact except you know who (the ones who will always live in denial). If your beloved OBL is alive please bring him forth, and if he was dead way before the operation, please feel free to prove it with facts and stop conceptualizing.

"Even" those who speak English is different from "Only" those who speak English. Hate or Love for Pakistan or Pakistanis is irrelevant. Ordinary Pakistanis were not aware that OBL was living in Abbotabad. I've seen "wag the dog". It's fiction. Even if it were true, the plot had a motive. The US has no need to create a movie to discredit Pakistan. Regarding reality, talk to Dr. Afridi.

Then, why did US sanction Pakistan in the 1990s? US has acted against Pakistan each time it did not need Pakistan. When it needed Pakistan sanctions were lifted and money flowed(not to the civilian sector but to the military), as you said. But, before India was not the power it is today. US supported India in the 1962 war and even gave it military and civilian aid. It admonished Pakistan for attacking a peaceful and Democratic India! Aid to Pakistan was withheld!! Whose side do you think America will choose now? Why should it offer assistance after everything Pakistan has done to America? Do you have any idea how much hatred Americans reserve for Pakistanis now?

A never ending series of conspiracies to malign Pakistan. Osama was never here, that makes the entire movie just a bluff. So i say let them allow it so people can laugh at the fake drama. The real Osama is long dead, or from what i have heard from certain reliable sources, he is probably enjoying himself somewhere in US.

To all those people who believe that this movie or any other fictional stuff they show to propagate their ideas and agendas, I have only two things to say. First if possible watch "Wag the Dog" with De Niro and Dustin Hoffman and secondly the winners write the history. So if the WWII was won by the Nazis, we might not only be speaking German but America and Co. would have been the biggest evil in the world!
