Former India great Sunil Gavaskar termed Pakistan’s abject surrender in the 3rd ODI against India “baffling display of timid batting” and suggested captain Misbah-ul-Haq rethink his place in the shorter-form of the game.

Pakistan, who won the three-match ODI series 2-1, lost the last game in New Delhi by 10 runs chasing a paltry total of 167. Although the defeat was drowned in euphoria at Pakistan’s triumph, the Indian batting legend said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) needed to take some tough decisions.

“One would have thought that the experienced Misbah-ul-Haq would have been able to handle the situation, but he inexplicably went into a shell and at the other end the excitable Umar Akmal was just waiting to do something rash,” Gavaskar said in his columns for Gulf News.

“It was the approach of Misbah that cost Pakistan the game, much as it did in the semi-finals of the World Cup two years back. Pakistan may have won the one-day series 2-1, but if they are to carry on winning then some serious thought needs to be applied to Misbah’s position in the team. He is not getting any younger and it was his dropped catch in Chennai that allowed Dhoni to go on to a century,” he added.

Gavaskar also tipped Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan’s captain in T20s, to take charge of the ODI side.

“Hafeez is looking a good leader and the way he is batting and bowling, as well as taking superb catches, he could be the man that Pakistan needs to win glory again. With the World Cup just a couple of years away, Pakistan, like India, should be looking at building a nucleus for that event — just like India seemed to be doing with the messages sent to two senior and prolific players by leaving them out of the team,” he said.

Whether Pakistan are ready to follow India’s lead it remains to be seen, but they will need to iron out the chinks fast as their next assignment pits them against the top-ranked South Africans in a three-match Test series, two T20s and five ODIs. The long tour starts on January 25 and will run until March 24.

Agree with that. Umar has genuine talent. He also has had the misfortune to bat in the middle order too often with Misbah as his partner. Someone has to score the runs & if Misbah refuses to, someone else has to. Umar is too often forced to take risks & it's pathetic that the captain places these additional pressures on his younger players.

Pakistan didn't lose that game fighting. It was a whimpish feeble defeat that should have had no chance of happening after the great start to the innings. However Misbah put paid to that.

Pakistan won the series despite Misbah's inclusion, and lost the last game because of it.

Who can forget the innings he played in Mohali? rewind a few years back and you can see what he did in South Africa in t20 final. He is over his peak, just dragging on and keeping the door shut on some deserving youngsters. PCB should seriously decide to ask Misbah to retire from the ODIs. He can play in tests as long as his form is there. Its an irony that he was overlooked at a younger age, but, at that time we had a very formidable middle order,

no cheats please. We ca win without them. Pakistan won 92 WC without one of the greatest bowlers ever to grace the field i.e Waqar Younis, we can stil do it without these two cheats

If you look carefully just see what the team runrate is when Naasir,Hafeez are batting and Misbah just comes in and starts digging a hole for the whole team with his strike rate 50 and 60 which is totally unacceptable in ODIs. Middle order batsmen are very big players they are century makers and they take the game away from the opposition they dont sink their own team !

Yeah, he did steady Pakistan cricket and the team, but things have moved on since then. Its time now for Misbah to hand the reins to Hafeez. I don't have a problem with him as a captain, if he had a place in the team to begin with! Its about time we gave others extended runs, Azhar Ali can develop into a good ODI batsman and the poor Hammad Azam, when will he ever get a chance! he is a decent enough batsman

This is Gavaskar's personal opinion. Every one has his right to give his opinion, whether anyone agrees or not. Once again, Pakistan cricket team snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! Now that World Cup is round the corner, Its high time that PCB should help restore Mohammad Amir and Asif. If that happened, then, Pakistan's bowling attack will be able to demolish any batting line up in the game, it'll be a World beater team, will achieve many "grand slams" in the future.

Some players aren't just born for fast pace games, we have an excellent example of Justin Langer from Australia, he was a regular pick along with Mathew Hayden for Test Matches, but he was not playing ODIs. Misbah can play a key role in Test matches playing at number 3 or 4 for Pakistan, as there are no doubts on his defense and technique but when it comes to scoring runs at some "Required rate" Misbah just doesn't work there ... Sunny is right Hafeez should replace him in ODIs

I respect Gavasker for his great batting. However, his opinion about Misbah is totally wrong. Misbah came to Pakistan during a very difficult time. He was able to stablise things and bring in good leadership. Please have a look at his track record. Gavaskar's comment about Misbah dropping a catch is senseless. Yuvarj dropped Nasir's catch so that does mean he should be dropped from the Indian team. Pakistan knows that Misbah has a couple of years and is working on a transition plan. Please remember that under Misbah's leadership we won the ODI series against India in India.

I think MISBAH is the best captain Pakistan ever had.PCB must keep him until he turns 65, then they can let him go. Afridi needs some “Peshawari Naswar”, it will bring him back in full form. PCB can hire Sachin T. as a Batting coach and Dhoni as Fielding coach. It bring bring back those glorious old days when we used to lose every damn match.

I totally agree with one of the batting greats, In the third ODI Misbah should have finished the game for Pakistan instead he gone into a shell and allowed pressure to be built on his team mates. Keeping in veiw the forthcoming world cup, a young batsman like Haris Sohail should be groomed and Misbah must say farewell to ODI for Pakistan

Gavasker is absolutely correct. Misbah made 39 in 82 deliveries, am not even counting the dot balls he played here. He has lost matches for Pakistan in a similar fashion on three other occasions against India. The two games in the first T20 WCs and the 2011 ODI WC. The guy never learns. Kamran Akmal too needs to be chucked out. Hafeez is an aggressive and an intelligent captain and he leads by example. Misbah brings the whole team down with his strike rate in the middle. He should go. It's happened too many times.

I agree 100%,. its time to send Umar, Kamran and Misbah home. Margin of defeat would have been lot bigger if these 3 werent part of the team. Bring new ppl in that are performing in domestic not the old failures that had let the team down again and again.

Aside from his batting style, the decisions and strategy of misbah works against the team. Like when india was 29/5 he just took away all the attack and allowed dhoni to score his century with singles. How can you not attack after such a great start??? I was expect 110 all out by then. Also if you have less than 200 total against india, you should focus on wrapping the match in early 40 overs. Junaid khan was given 9 overs eventhough he got 4wickets in that match?! He simply lacks aggression as a player and as a leader.

Time for PCB to INVEST in FUTURE It is the right time to fully appreciate PCB and Pakistani cricket team for basically two things. Firstly, for winning the ODI series against India 2-1 and secondly, for completing a very sensitive tour, absolutely incident free. Now, this is also very appropriate time for the PCB, to finalise its short and long term future plans, with regard to the policy of categorising players for the teams for Test's, ODI's and T20's. This is necessary, because Pakistan will be competing for Test Championship, Champion's Trophy, T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup, all within next 36 months. So, with an eye on the future, the PCB planning should focus on such potential players, who have the capacity or who can be groomed to have the capacity, to deliver for Pakistan, in the days to come. We should not waste time, energy and money on such players, who are past their prime and per se wants to continue playing, just for selfish reasons; but they are practically blocking the future of up coming and young players, for an indefinite period. In this connection, PCB recently, took a difficult, bold and wise decision of dropping Shahid Afridi from the ODI version of the game. While, not taking anything from the past contributions of Shahid Afridi, PCB's decision was very progressive and forward looking, but in my opinion, was still a bit late. National interests must not be compromised for personal wishes. Now, again the time has come to select the players for the different versions of the game, on the basis of talent and capacity of the players, with prime objective of INVESTING in future. PCB should adopt a policy of bearing with the failures of the fresh lot with patience, rather than pursuing with old horses, who have even lost the strength, to easily hit sixes or even boundaries to reasonably good bowlers, or take three or four runs without being exhausted, on a slightly bigger grounds. According to my observations, PCB must think about the future of the following players in a very rational manner. 1. Misbah ul Haq. He is not at all capable to play till the 2015 ODI World Cup. Even now, he is over age and not capable of steering the team out of a crisis situations, in front of WORLD CLASS bowling, particularly against out of sub-continent teams. So, why not to groom a fresh batsman instead of MUH and on the other hand, give the captaincy to Muhammad Hafeez, for gaining the experience for the coming Champions Trophy and the ensuing ODI World Cup? 2. Younis Khan. Our selectors took a retrogressive action in recalling him from the ODI retirement. Even his presence in the team today in the 3rd ODI, couldn't save Pakistan from a mere 10 runs defeat against India. His selection for the Indian tour has cost us heavily, in not giving experience to a youngster. He should be decently thanked for his services and let him not block the future of any budding batsman. PCB should not be so callous with the new generation of batsmen, that retired batsmen be made to come in their way. If PCB had recalled Muhammad Yousaf or even Inzamam ul Haq, may be, they would have scored runs more than the newcomers, but then we can't and must not live in the past, under any circumstances. For that matter, if India lost the ODI series against Pakistan, no heavens have fallen. Similarly, if we had lost to India with fresh legs, it would have been a gain of experience, rather than winning with recall, of retired persons. 3. Kamran Akmal. Just like Shahid Afridi (who can still be selected for few more weeks and months for his bowling abilities) Kamran Akmal is a spent cartridge; and to continue with him is in fact, deceiving ourselves. He may still give some performances against mediocre bowling, but against world class bowlers, his batting is absolutely UN-DEPENDABALE. As far as his wicket keeping is concerned, it is OK. However, there is no shortage of young generation of agile wicket keepers and hence, further continuation with Kamran Akmal, is like living in a fools paradise. 4. Shoaib Malik. There is no doubt that he was past his prime many months ago. He has reached a stage, where its impossible for him to perform against quality bowling, particularly in ODI and T20 versions of the game. If we argue that he performed well in domestic level, then the selectors should be told that domestic level performances are for the new players. International players are judged on their performances against foreign teams. These are two separate criterions for the different levels of players. If the selectors still wants to retain some old horses, for Test matches for some time, then PCB management shall be the better judge. However, these old players must not be used in a way to stop the career of the budding players. 5. Umar Akmal. He was touted in the past to be a player with immense talent. However, he has proved wrong all his fans and well wishers. In fact, he is the most UN-DEPENDABLE batsman in the team. Not to play him is a risk. However, to play him is a bigger risk. While batting, he is a very risky person for the batsman at the other end. Moreover, mostly his shot selections are very poor. He never puts a price on his wicket. Also it looks that in his failures, there is a big hand of his head coach. Somehow, this man looks a fit case for sending him to a psychologist, for making him a person with some sense of responsibilities and strong mental power, who should be able to focus on teams goal achievement. Till such time he is transformed into a mature person, he seems to utterly misfit in the national squad.

Well I think we need Misbah as he provide the cool and calm factor to the team, agree he is slow but still the team gets out without compleating 50 overs, so what is the harm if he is consuming some deliveries. You will see in the next tour of South Africa he will be the most successful batsman. I back Misbah as I remember how hard it was to lead Pakistan when he took over...

This is the time for the board to seriously plan for knitting together a team for the next world cup. This would certainly entail taking risky initiatives, however, in the process they will certainly be able to pick the right combination needed for the next world cup.

I totally agree with Gavaskers views. This was not the first time that Misbah has gone into a shell and his painful batting display has cost Pakistan the match. I don't know what his game plan was but it was definitely not to win this game. It is after encounters such as this that people start raising questions of 'match fixing'. Have some dignity Misbah and retire from ODI cricket just the same way that you retired from T20's. Thanks :)

Strange....Misbah should go after a historic win against India in India. Just track Misbah's record as a captain when he took over in difficult times. Pakistan team after having denied international cricket at home, has achieved great winning streaks under Misbah's command. In 2012, no series loss. What else do you want? Mr. Gavaskar, we can observe the great achievements India is achieving under your patronage. You better keep poking your nose in your own affairs.

Sunny is a world class cricketer who has an eye to judge a player by his skills and callibre. He is not the only one who criticize Misbah's poor captaincy skills there are sr pak cricketers too who have expressed the same about misbah as player & captain. One must have a cricketting brain to qualify to be a captain and Hafeez is one of them.

January 9, 2013 2:57 am
The Greatest of the Greats has spoken. Misbah and also Younis should be used only in the test cricket format. But cricketers like Umar Akmal who throws away his wicket in every outing in the most comical manner can not replace these guys. Shahid Afridi who is old but also very out of form for so long that he may consider to call it a day or play the full domestic season and may be county cricket also so he can get back to his original form. Like India, Kholi, Raina and Sharma are very well established and got more opportunities internationally to learn all three formats of cricket. Look at Pujara and some upcoming players who are knocking the doors and can get a selector's approval any day or anytime. So it is always good to have replacements ready and than let the old players go.
Bilal

It is not only the last ODI but also in the first ODI he dropped an easy catch of Dhoni to let them back in the game. Misbah has outlived his utility in ODI. He should pass the baton and move on.
