VISITING Malta, an island state in the Mediterranean, a couple of decades ago, I came across a senior Maltese officer from their national flag carrier who told me that Air Malta pilots and technical staff were all trained by PIA. He showered bundles of praise on PIA training staff, adding that the Maltese airline was still maintaining high standards set by their training godfathers. Twenty years on, it could be embarrassing seeing the gentleman again who could be harbouring opposite views. Will merit ever have its way in our national airlines? DR SHAHID QAYYUM Lahore

Not only PIA but most other institutions along with the country has been on a downward slope after the late 60's early 70's. The reason being, this country has been unable to produce a leader capable of stabilising the State and the vacuum has been filled by selfish and destructive people.

The root cause of all evil is political interference, bring an end to it, PIA has got lot of potential to compete with the major airlines and regain it lost legacy. But its heartening to see the flag carrier going down same is the case with Pakistan.
