DURBAN, Dec 21: Fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt took two early wickets to start a slide from which New Zealand never recovered in the first Twenty20 International against South Africa at Kingsmead here on Friday.
New Zealand were bowled out for 86 in 18.2 overs with new cap Colin Munro making 23 and Doug Bracewell hitting 21 not out.
Kleinveldt took three wickets for 18, while fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Chris Morris and left-arm spinner Robin Peterson claimed two wickets each.
Kleinveldt dismissed Rob Nicol and New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the tourists lost three wickets inside the first five overs after winning the toss in the first of three matches.
Nicol charged the fast bowler and was caught behind, while McCullum top-edged a hook and was caught at fine leg.
New Zealand were without leading batsman Martin Guptill and left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult, who were suffering from stomach ailments.
Guptill’s absence left the batting short of experience and the early loss of McCullum was a major setback for the tourists on a pitch with pace and bounce.—AFP
