Sitting in a posh hotel in Geneva, Switzerland, the young leader of Balochistan was unwilling to come back to Pakistan, or reconcile. “Nothing short of independence of Balochistan is acceptable,” was his firm reply.

Brahumdagh Bugti is a cool, composed and soft-spoken young man. Talking to him, one does not get the impression of being in the presence of a revolutionary, insurgent or guerilla fighter, allegedly running terrorists’ training camps in Afghanistan. His composure, even when serious and personal questions were asked, was impressive.

His general appearance was also starkly different from what one would have expected. Meeting him was hardly likely. But, he has his own network, which had assured me that he would get in touch. He did, one evening. He walked in — in beret cap, the typical Baloch beard shaven off. Wearing a jeans and shirt, he had no resemblance with any of his common photos available on websites, or seen in newspapers.

Brahumdagh, to one’s astonishment, is a clear-headed person. He seems to have well-thought out all the issues, which he thinks are relevant to Balochistan. What are the basis on which he claims to be representing the Baloch and demanding independence? He said he did not claim to solely represent the Baloch. However he added, “The majority supports independence. I challenge. Let there be a referendum under the auspices of the United Nations, only in the Baloch areas. If the people say they want to live with Pakistan, I will have no objection; I will accept that. I will give up my demand.”

He does not speak on behalf of the Pashtun areas. “I talk about the independence of the Baloch people, not about Pashtuns. But that does not mean we have any difference with them. They may decide about their own future.”

Brahumdagh is of the view that the exploitation of the resources of Balochistan and depriving the people of these benefits and their rights are the basic grievances. Gas was first discovered in Balochistan, but the Baloch were not given it, similarly, the construction of port in Gwadar did not benefit the Baloch people, he says.

Brahumdagh blames Gen (retd) Pervaiz Musharraf for worsening the situation. He claims, the general in 2002, wanted to have deep drilling in Bugti areas, but “My grandfather refused to give permission. The government offered a huge amount — four billion or eight billion — but the elder Bugti refused and asked for previous accounts of the gas recovered from Sui”.

Even speaking privately, Brahumdagh is not willing to budge. No talks, no reconciliation, no coming back to Pakistan, are his firm replies, confident, and apparently well-considered. “None. Nothing short of independence,” he says resolutely, when asked at the end of the interview, “Any possibility and any chance of reconciliation.”

Very finely explained IQBAL BALOCH. Soon after Bhutto's Army Operations of 1973-6, I happened to meet Qaisar Murree and asked him as to why were they killing Army people, when they were constructing roads, schools and hospitals in their areas. Instead of replying my question he instantly asked me that, if they do all that, how could the Sardars control their people? Few days back Akhtar Mangal and all others alike, tried to create the same hype, but couldn't stand to their claims. CJ being from Quetta, took notice and after verifying from agencies gave his verdict that all fuss in Baluchistan has been created by these Waderas and Sardars sitting in Assemblies and key posts. He declared it a complete failure of Government and the CM Baluchistan, who have failed to provide the basic constitutional right to people of Baluchistan. It is suprising that again this joker is being advertized.

Its unfortunate to see our some leaders sitting outside Pakistan and ruling the country. How can they know the general problems of their own people when they do not live under the same conditions and face the reality. If Jinnah wanted, he could have a very comfortable lifestyle in the west but he devoted his cause for the people of sub-continent. This is what true leadership means. Imran Khan is another individual who comes to my mind who has genuine concerns for its country and people. This guy just needs to rule and wants power. Long live pakistan

Your family settled for the royalty from SUI gas, on behalf of poor people. Grew a militia, and a state within a state. How many schools you opened in your tiny state, how many hospitals? how you changed people's life with the resources you had? Why you were all in all of those poor people, you only got that authority because of countless guns that you bought from the royalty that you promised to spend on poor Balochs. You are a criminal in my eyes. Bugti was himself an Oxford graduate and never let his people pass primary education, as he knew if they got education then they will stop bowing infront of him. Despite all your crimes, I do not support the way Army dealt with this problem. I am not in favor of killing the thug thief. I wish government had not given overdose of punishment for your crimes. I also wish you never had started to become pharaoh. You better not speak for Balochs as well, you have no moral authority. A leader stays with nation till death. Switzerland ... are you kidding me? LONG LIVE PAKISTAN!

How many days did Poonja spend in jail. He could not speak the language and nor was accustomed to the tradition of the land. Long live Baluchistan and its guardians.

Seems like a similar thing as Altaf Hussain, sitting from far away and making comments. I agree he has to come back, atleast his elders were in the country and died for the cause

I myself is baloch and do not consider the claim of Brahmdagh correct that majority of Baloch want independence. I being a learned baloch know that the number of opportunities (economic, educational and as well as freedom) now available to Baloch people will not be available to them in any other case. Due to the dominance of Baloch Sardars, it will take many centuries for common Baloch to be in a position to challenge these Sardars and decide for their future. As for as the claim of exploitation by others of Baloch resources is concerned, again this is wrong. Income of same resources made Mr. Akbar Bugti and other Sardars billionaire. Their life styles are enough proves of their lavish spending. Sibling of these Sardars are made available the best of everything, may it be a education or living. Infact they were the ones who did not let trickle down the effects of these resources to common poor Balochs and kept piling their bank balances. Had our Sardars been sincere in uplifting poor Balochs, I think that there would not have been a dearth of resources. At the end I would just say that Pakistan has given us a lot of freedom which will not be possible in any other case and we dont want to go into the slavery of these criminal Sardars. How can he represent Baloch people, when he lives in a life of luxury and party. Be a man, and fight among your brothers. I believe he is not a leader but a man with his own gains. He is a person of hallow soul..... LONG LIVE PAKISTAN.
