THIS is apropos of the news item (Dec 5) wherein the WWF has demanded the destruction of seized leather jackets with (jackal/fox) fur trimmings. It is good on the part of our Customs officials but not so good on the part of the WWF.
Why not? Let’s see why. Instead of just destroying the seized jacket, why not auction those jackets to the country’s elite and hand over the lot to the highest bidder.
The amount thus received should be donated to the Customs Department. Once that is done, the jackets should be put to fire by the purchaser; in the presence of cameras.
This will have three advantages: (a) the whole episode will get tremendous publicity within the country and abroad; (b) show the world how much love we have
for mother nature and (c) the Customs Department will get a handsome amount that it can distribute equitably among those who did the fine job.
It will also highlight the importance of seizure and that the Customs Department cares for those who do a good job.
