BANGLADESH foreign minister has asked our foreign minister to apologise for “war crimes” committed by the army during the 1971 war.

It amounts to ridiculing sacrifices of those soldiers not involved in any crime, incriminating the entire population of West Pakistan being mercilessly flogged during martial law, condoning heinous crimes committed by the revolting soldiers and Mukti Bahini against our soldiers and their families.

I loved East Pakistanis and now I love Bangladeshis as well, not responsible for the 1971 tragedy. Let us jointly agree and condemn all those at the top responsible for break-up of Pakistan and the atrocities, the greatest tragedy since 1947 as I feel.

Anon. Bangladesh is was and will remain Islamic till Qiyamah. Disagreements and war between brothers is not new. However, for a non-believer it is difficult to understand. May Allah guide all of us Aameen.

An apology does not make anybody small.. It helps in healing wounds and let bygones be bygones. Bengalis suffered a lot during 1971. The repression by West Pakistan was large enough to end the dream of an Islamic nation...

Pakistan should apologise. End of story. They will pay with another division of their country in the next thirty years if not earlier unless they shed their arrogance.

It is interesting that Pakistan wanted apology, not regrets, over the Salala incident. Many lives lost in Bangladesh than over the Salala incident.

Mukti Bahini came into picture to oppose the atrocities forced upon the Bangla speaking Muslims including depriving then their legitimate political right to rule.. So do you think, apology can be tendered only to those who do not oppose at all.. A Distorted history taught in Pakistan helprd develop an escaping mindset

Defending one,s country and fighting against rebels has never been a crime,Though acts of individuals must be condemned and that we do..What else Bangladeshis want from us?

I fully agree with the these views. This arrogance of not apologizing for an obvious crime would not create a good impression of Pakistan (Yes, the IMAGE, not the ground reality, which is always a VERY BIG issue for Pakistan). If the NATO and USA officials could apologize for killing a few dozens Pakistanis, why can’t Pakistan apologize for killing hundreds of thousands of East Pakistanis?

Pakistan should apologize for any mistakes and wrongdoings against other nations and it's own people, especially one so blatantantly committed by our army. It doesn't make us small but big. It doesn't humiliate it but other nations will respect us for showing maturity. In case of Bangladesh this apology should be comprehensive and hopefully take away the election slogan that current BD prime minister uses to win elections.

It makes a lot of sense. We should say NEVER AGAIN and be serious about it.

Bangladesh, especially Sh. Hasina Wajid should move on. It's been 41 years and both sides lost their loved ones. Not letting by gones be by gones is a trait South Asians are good at. Pakistan does not need to offer apology to Bangladesh for anything; l believe Pakistan has already offered regrets on many occassions and that should suffice.

I feel your frsutration and anger Akram Sahib. However, the tragedy of East Pakistan/Bangladesh didn't happen in 1971, it started a long time before that. Of-course you are right, the in-humanity dished out wasn't just on our part but Mukti Bahini played it full part in it as well. However, the fact is that we let it happen and those people on our side who were responsible for heinous crimes went un-punished (Unfortunately those responsible for such crimes in Bangladesh also went un-punished). There was no accounatbility process other than Hamud-Rehman commission. We (the West Pakistanis) are the larger party in the issue and we should have a big heart and apologise for our role, if the Bangladeshis receiprocate the gesture then well and good, but if they don't thats up to them. We should do our duty.

Whoever has committed a crime should seek forgiveness. However, will Bangladesh government apologise for the murder, rape and pillage of Pakistani citizens committed by their Mukti Bahini. More than 40 years ago terrible acts were committed by Government of Pakistan and also by Mukti Bahini in what was then East Pakistan. We should condemn all individuals and parties who committed sins. In any case I earnestly wait for the day of reckoning so as to seek justice from Allah against those who killed my un-armed peaceful father and killed my childhood and life has never been the same again.
