KARACHI, Nov 2: A factory worker died in a fire that broke out in an industrial unit in New Karachi early Friday morning, police said.

They added that the fire erupted in the plastic-components manufacturing unit, allied with the automobile industry, in Sector 11-J within the remit of the New Karachi police station.

It was 6:30am when the fire broke out in a unit and quickly spread to other portions of the factory while two workers were present inside the unit.

While 23-year-old Mohammad Sajjad managed to escape, Iqbal Hussain stayed and tried to douse the fire with water from a tap on the premises.

During the struggle, he suffered serious burns and fell unconscious, the police said, adding that he had died by the time he was taken out after a three-hour-long fire-fighting operation.

The police said that Hussain had been working at the factory for the past three years. The deceased was a resident of Sector 11-E, New Karachi, they added.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
