COLOMBO: Veteran spinner Rangana Herath grabbed 3-25 to lift hosts Sri Lanka into the World Twenty20 final with a 16-run victory over Pakistan in Colombo on Thursday.

AS IT HAPPENED | IN PICTURES

Sri Lanka, restricted to 139-4 after electing to bat, hit back to keep Pakistan down to 123-7 in a thrilling semi-final before 35,000 screaming fans at the Premadasa stadium.

Herath, the 34-year-old left-arm spinner playing only his sixth T20 international, was supported by two wickets each from seamer Angelo Mathews and unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis.

It was Sri Lanka's second appearance in the World Twenty20 final, having lost to Pakistan in the 2009 title clash at Lord's.

It was also the first time in four editions of the tournament that began in 2007 that a host country had made it past the semi-final round.

Rival captains Mahela Jayawardene and Mohammad Hafeez top-scored for their teams with 42 each, but the other batsmen struggled to force the pace on a sluggish pitch that hampered stroke-making.

“I think we were about 15 runs short although 140 was a par score on this wicket,” said Jayawardene.

“We made quite a few mistakes in the field but that did not cost us a great deal.”

Jayawardene said he decided to play Herath in place of Akila Dananjaya because Pakistan were reputed to be weak against left-arm spin.

“It was a tough call to keep out Dananjaya on his birthday, but we all know what a champion bowler Herath is. He has delivered when the team needs him most and he did the same again today.”

Hafeez said the loss of quick wickets in the middle overs cost Pakistan the game.

“It was disappointing not to have a partnership going because 140 was certainly gettable on this pitch,” he said.

“But I am still proud of my players because as a team we played well in the tournament. If anything needs to be worked on, it is the way we chase targets.

We need to plan a way to get where we want to.”

Sri Lanka wasted a sound start to plod to 123-4 in 19 overs, before Thisara Perera smashed three boundaries in the final over of seamer Umar Gul, which realised 16 runs -- ultimately the margin of victory.

Pakistan's openers Hafeez and Imran Nazir began the reply on a confident note, putting on 31 for the first wicket in six overs.

Mendis, brought on to send down the sixth over, broke the stand with the last delivery by bowling Nazir for 20.

Pakistan moved to 55-1 in the ninth over when Mathews grabbed two wickets in four balls to swing the match Sri Lanka's way.

Mathews first had Nasir Jamshed leg-before -- an unfortunate dismissal for the batsman since replays showed the ball pitch outside the leg-stump -- before getting Kamran Akmal caught at mid-wicket.

In the next over, Herath bowled new batsman Shoaib Malik for six to leave Pakistan tottering at 64-4 in 11 overs.

Hafeez, dropped by Lasith Malinga on 24, added 18 more runs when he was stumped off Herath, who then bowled Shahid Afridi first ball.

Earlier, Sri Lankan openers Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan put on 63 in 10 overs, a slow start by Twenty20 standards but crucial nevertheless with their team having all their wickets in hand.

Jayawardene liberally employed the reverse sweep during his knock 36-ball 42, but was caught at fine-leg while attempting the same shot off Afridi.

Dilshan was unusually subdued during his innings, taking 43 balls to score 35 with the help of three boundaries.

Australia and the West Indies will clash in the second semi-final on Friday. The final is scheduled for Sunday.

At the end of the day India only have themselves to blame. Only if they had made Australia chase the target in a few more overs. Only if they had chased pakistans target quicker. At the end of the day India won 4 out of 5 matches and so did Australia and Pakistan. Its a game of 'Only ifs'. Take it on the chin!

Common bhai!! It was this very poor umpiring which won you games in Sharjah in the 80s and 90s. Certainly one bad decision and that too very close one cannot decide the result of a match. This pakistan team didn't deserve to be there in the semis itself with such pathetic batsmen. U should consider yourself lucky to have reached the semis as this team actually deserved to get knocked out in the group stage itself.

My comment is the repetation of earlier Dawn head line. Thank you Srilanka.

Sri Lanka played with a strategy. Pakistani captain did not have one. It’s apparent now that Captain’s disliking of Abdul Razzak cost Pakistan the T20 championship. The Pakistan captain did not use any analytical thinking in any game. His gamble on Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi failed. He continually let out of form players play and fail. In general the Pakistani team lacked mental toughness. T20 is a game of strategy and strength; the Pakistan’s team lacked both. One cannot hope to win a championship purely on prayers!

Very sad to see pakistan out of this tournament. It's a team game and everyone should take the responsibility. though i feel Naseer's decision was unfortunate. Hafeez seems to panic under pressure situations, might improve in future but clearly, this is one of the biggest weak points. I used to like Shahid earlier mainly during 2009 T20WC but he is refusing to take any responsibility as far as batting is concerned. i echo most of the commneters' sentiment to send U Akmal up the order, he can help Pak win many matches if they send him up the order. Never the less congratulations for reaching all the semi finals. No mean feet either. From India

Wrong field placement in the death overs, especially the lst one coupled with chronic failure of people like Afridi led to Pakistan's downfall. They remain an erratic and unreliable bunch of individuals nota cohesive well knit team.

We all are so quick in demanding accountability of a team of eleven players and wish to send everyone packing, why then do we tolerate continuously for years on the established & recognized corrupt legislators and do not demand similar accountability of them.

India played well but rules are rules my indian mates. You cant say that Pakistan reached semis by luck they had also won 4 out of 5 matches as do India. As far as semi is concerned....pure captaincy had cost them a match. Umar akmal should come before elder akmal as he has a potential of run chase by taking 2's and a odd boundary in an over. I like the Virat's chase for india against any opponent. He never tries to take 15 runs in an over ..jus concentrate on knocking around and take singals and 1 odd boundary in an over. thats how target is chased. Any ways well played lankans!! Now hoping to get rid of all old guns from Pakistan team and fresh blood should be inducted in likes of Junaid khan, hammad azam, zia ulhaq, asad shafiq etc in the sqaud and prepare for WC 2015.

India is not the best team either. That's why it couldn't even make to semis. Both Pakistan and India need to improve their game

Umer Akmal and Shoaib Malik are the real bad performer in this T20 worldcup for Pakistan. They should be penalised and must not represent Pakistan any further. Shoaib Malik throughout the series scores 37,7,9,12,28,4,6 ....not even a single fifty he should left international cricket forever. Umer Akamal scores at 2,10,23,43,21,9,29 ... having no fifty and poor poor strike rate. The big problem with him is the attitude of Misbha he has with batting he has not have capability to increase sttrike rate and too much dot ball playing is his biggest mistake, besides this he hasnot have the capability to play with tail ender and a bad finisher, every now and than in last few overs he just give a single to a tail ender and enforce tail ender to hit boundry rather than striking self. We have the example of match against south Africa where all the responsibility lies on Umer Gul to finish the game and he (umer Akmal) played 43 with 42 ball preety much selfish attitude as Misbah approach. He should have to left the Internation Cricket too for the sake of Pakistan.

No point blaming Afridi. He is a good bowler. He can't be blamed for his batting. The overall problem is we lack quality batsman who can play longer innings at good strike rate.

The time Nasir Jamshed was given out "WRONGLY", that was the turning point of the game. Inexperienced umpire to blame for the loss. Will umpire be held responsible for his wrong decision. Will his fee be cut 50% for the wrong decision? Umar Akmal should have been sent for batting at no. 4 or 5. He is capable of scoring runs but he could do too little too late to keep the pace due to limited overs in hand. No doubt Afridi played a major role in demolishing the game and the winning moral and attitude. Good Luck Sri Lanka for the good performance and wish Sri Lank lift T20 Trophy.

We all know how Pakistan got hammered by India yet again on Sunday. If not for Aussies Pakistan would have packed their bags long ago! The most overhyped team with below average batsman! Afridi can sell eggs with all his ducks, unmarked Akmal can only remove his helmet and pray that bat hits the ball and Imran Nazir only know how to swipe! If not for unmarked gul, they would have lost miserably against South Africa also..go get a life and real about your team!

Had expected a lot from yesterday's semi final touted as the battle of the spinners. In the end the match turned out to be a damp squib. I don't have any soft corner for Pakistan or support their ideologies but due credit must be given where it is deserved. They have really played as a 'TEAM' and the word team is of utmost importance out here. They showed some true grit & determination in adverse situations. Their fielding is mediocre, batting is avg but all that is compensated by their world class bowling unit. For some odd reason I fail to understand as to why the Pak mgmt is against Abdul Razzaq who playes T20 cricket world over but does not find a place in the Pak playing XI. Afridi's days are numbered and now is the right time for him to hang his boots gracefully before the Pak mgmt takes that decision. Anyways now wish Windies sweep aside the Aussies and lift the trophy.

How this team ever wins! They can't make 130-140 runs. Entire team bats one way - swing or miss, all bowlers bowl 'intelligent' bowls, everyone drops catches, they leak runs in field and miss runs while running. How this team ever wins! Fluke, fluke, fluke!.

Our team is for sure better than India. There is no Q about it. However, I agree that we must send Afridi home. He is disaster. He should have scored at least 20 to save the match. His overall performance as he too agreed was pathetic and not up to the mark. Sri Lanka Spin was superb and I congratulate Sri Lanka to win the game and wish they win the world cup. Our all support and prayers are with SL team. Well done Sri Lanka! Best of luck.

I cant understand the logic behind selecting the team and the batting order. The batsmen in best form, Umer Akmal and Nasir Jamshed should bat together on top of the order. And why did Sohail Tanvir bat before Umer Gul? Is that why Umer Gul did not show the agresssion Pakistan needed after Tanvir got out? Too many questions. It is time we put some brains behind the team.
