Pakistan, hockey gold medallists in 1960, 1968 and 1984, stepped back into contention for a semi-final spot with a nail-biting 5-4 win over South Africa on Sunday.

It took their points tally to seven from four matches – one behind World Cup winners Australia and Great Britain.

On Tuesday, Pakistan tackle world champions Australia.

“Australia are one of the best sides here. We cannot make any mistakes in that match,” said Pakistan coach Akhtar Chaudhry while talking to AFP.

“We have to play very carefully and if my forwards move like they did against South Africa, it will be a very good match.”

In an earlier interview at Cannock Hockey Club, manager Khawaja Mohammed Junaid said that there have been difficulties and there is competition among the players.

He explained that individual weaknesses are criticized privately and team meetings are kept positive and constructive, but more notably “we watch uplifting movies and go for coffee together off pitch. I am very grateful to each player as we have become well connected.”

Captain Sohail Abbas said that the players need to stay focused, especially at this stage of the tournament and asked the fans for their full support.

“Focus on being sincere to yourself both critically and mentally,” the penalty-corner specialist said.

“What we need from Pakistan is their prayers and support. When you clap…clap with both hands,” he added.

Beat Australia, that's what I can wish for Pakistan, Heartfelt wishes to Pakistan from India. Indian hockey team was too poor to prove its lost might. Now Pakistan has to show these guys that they have learnt the ABC of hockey from India and Pakistan. My word, to the team is to attack from all sides.

Pakistani team need a hardworking. In last match although they win the game but it was very poor performance. Only junior player played well but they also need command on dribbling and ball possession. It is also seen in the last match that they lack of communication during play. But best of luck for Pakistani hockey team for the next match.

Team must improve its defence while going to offensive. Against aussies, it has always been an open match unlike european teams. Pakistan have a definite chance of upsetting them today.

Pakistan need to be attacking from the first second of the match. The defence needs to have confidence in itself and should make productive tackles rather than half-hearted efforts.

Why Pakistani player look to short and malnurished? Can PHF not hold a camp for few month to make sure the players get healthy diet and look not so haggard. If you look at the best of the best and compare them with not just rest of the World compare their overall health with Asian countries you will see the difference. They look so sub par in health. They are not even groomed properly.

Pakistan camp already sounds a bit reluctant. If they go on the defensive, they have absolutely no hope against Australia.
