THIS is with reference to the letter by Khalid Masood (July 22). The writer did not mention that the term ‘boson’ owes its name to the pioneering work of an Indian physicist, Satyendera Nath Bose (1894-1974), a lecturer at Kolkata University, who in 1924 sent a paper to Albert Einstein which is the initial and rudimentary basis of the boson theory.

Later on, apart from British scientist Peter Higgs (83) and his Belgian colleague Francois Englert (79), there are some other scientists, namely, Robert Brout of Belgium, who died last year, Americans Gerald Guralink, 75 , Carl Hagen, 75, and Briton Tom Kibble, 80, who jointly wrote a separate paper on the mechanism in the same year (1964) as Higgs.

Moreover, American Nobel Prize winner Philip Anderson, 88, also claimed to have come up with the concept two years earlier.

That conceptual theory of Higgs boson, by and large, now stands empirically verified through complex experiments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) operated by the European Organisation of Nuclear Research (CERN), in a 22-kilometre ring shaped tunnel deep underground near Geneva. The experiments found new particles consistent with Higgs.

Surprisingly, the writer has dubbed all that arduous scientific work merely as an elusion and illusion and outrightly denied the Big Bang theory as well.

The scientists from Albert Einstein down to legendary Stephen Hawking believe in the Big Bang theory as there is, so far, no other plausible alternative scientifically valid theory to explain the creation of the universe just as there is no alternative scientific theory other than the theory of evolution expounded brilliantly by Charles Darwin to explain the origin and evolution of species.

However, I agree that ‘God particle’ is a misnomer and no scientist, not even Peter Higgs, described and subscribed to that popular but scientifically incorrect term. God particle or precisely Higgs boson is the non-matter fundamental particle which acted as agent, messenger and force-carrier, seconds after the Big Bang, to confer mass to sub-atomic particles, the building blocks of the universe.

If we view that theory in the religious perspective, then it is logically safe to infer that the discovery of Higgs boson leads to the very fact that the ultimate and absolute reality is all-pervading energy (‘Noor’) essential for each and every form of existence.

That energy is the divine manifestation or attribute of God or in other words God is the sole and eternal source of that energy forming the essential basis of the whole universe.

That scientific concept conforms and confirms the universal spiritual concept of Pantheism (Wahdatul Wajood). Belief in Sufi thoughts of Wahdatul Wajood/universal spiritual unity consolidates the concept of universal humanity overcoming the hatred, prejudice, parochialism, bigotry, sectarianism, disunity and divisiveness, the menance of our present day society.

In the movies “Limitless” (Bradley Cooper), “Contact” (Jodi Foster), ”Stargate” (James Spader) and “Chain Reaction” (Keanu Reeves)… the plots were based on intentionally, scientifically, and systematically searching for an extremely tough to locate, exact combination / sequence / frequency, that when reached, would open a doorway “to another world” — Science Fiction Motion Pictures - yet this can be, and in my case WAS, accomplished “in the real world”……… “took 5 seconds / I was awake and felt layer by layer of beliefs change, which one by one, removed doubts and ability to resolve issues and so on and so on, and at the end of this change in my mind eliminating negative responses to all of my life events which led to my depression, there was a moment of calm, and then I felt all at once, my mind analyze what just happened, and like a light switch turning on, I felt my confidence come back, a feeling that I had not felt for many, many years” Steve Meyer

About the last three paras of the letter, the Quranic Verse 24:35 does confirm the fact about this energy (Noor), as below: "Allah is the Light (Noor) of the heavens and the earth." (24:35)

The article is very nicely written. Regarding Pantheism - it would be worth mentioning that "It is generally asserted that Hindu religious texts are the oldest known literature that contains pantheistic ideas." (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheism). It cannot be explicitly proved (unless you consider the experiment under discussion as a proof) - but it provides the best implicit explanation of many things happening around us.

These last three pararaphs in fact, contain my metaphysical and human dimension & construction upon a scientific theory. Is there any harm in publishing the same ?

Important to note that According to the Economist, the Higgs Boson was dubbed the “Goddamn Particle” by Leon Lederman since it was seemingly impossible to isolate. Lederman, a leading researcher in the field, wanted to title his book “The Goddamn Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?” But his editor decided that the title was too controversial and convinced Lederman to change the title to “The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?” That is the origin of the term "God particle"

Reman Saheb. I appreciate your courage in tracing the true background in detailing the reason it to be called Higgs Boson particle. The other writers never accepted that an Indian scientist can contribute theoretical possibility of the existence of such a particle long before it's existence confirmed only recently. Well, I also understand the debate to be called it a Gods Particle and your comments in this regard are rather more philosophical and based on emotions. There is nothing wrong in holding such a view and can not disputed. Enjoyed reading your comments on this subject. BNA

Science is above religion, nationality, tribalism and all those dividing elements - religious or otherwise. Science (and technology) in all respects should be useful to the mankind. Mr. Rehman highlights this point in his short essay. He deserves appreciation.

The original name for the God particle was the Goddamned Particle due to its illusiveness. Upon fear of retribution, it was shortened to God Particle by the author of a book about Higgs Boson.....hence the name in its current form.
