MUMBAI: Rajesh Khanna, often referred to as the “first superstar” of Bollywood and the Hindi film industry's biggest heart-throb in his day, died on Wednesday after months of being unwell. He was 69.

Khanna, who had been sick since April with an undisclosed illness rumoured to be cancer, passed away at his family home in Mumbai after being discharged from hospital on Tuesday, reports said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led an outpouring of grief on Twitter where fans reminisced over his greatest movies and wished his wife and two daughters well.

“I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and countless fans and admirers of Shri Rajesh Khanna,” said Singh's official Twitter feed.

Known as “Kaka” (uncle) to his fans, Khanna was not from an acting dynasty like many big Bollywood names. He was born in the city of Amritsar in the northwest of India in 1942 and enjoyed being on stage from his school days.

He made his film debut in “Aakhri Khat” (The Last Letter) in 1966 but his big break came with runaway hit “Aaradhna” (Worship) three years later, followed by a string of successes, with Khanna typically as the romantic lead.

His prominent hits of the 1970s included “Kati Patang” (Broken Kite), “Anand” (Happiness) and “Amar Prem” (Everlasting Love).

In total he appeared in more than 150 Hindi films.

Khanna's entry to the industry came at a time when fans were looking beyond fading stars of Bollywood legends such as Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand.

He was soon getting letters written in blood by his female fans and his car was marked with lipstick stains wherever he went. There were even reports of his female admirers marrying his photographs.

British broadcaster Jack Pizzey in a 1973 BBC documentary “Bombay Superstar” described Khanna as having the charisma of Italian actor Rudolph Valentino and the arrogance of Napoleon.

Many Indian hearts were broken when he married young actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973. They had two daughters and later separated, but she returned to look after him during his final days of illness.

Despite his huge success, Khanna's star was later eclipsed by that of actor Amitabh Bachchan, who emerged in the early 1970s as an anti-establishment hero in roles as an angry young man.

Indian audiences began to lose their taste for Khanna-style romances and family dramas, while Bachchan's roles identified with the frustration of the country's youth, struggling with a lack of opportunities during a closed economy.

Khanna never quite regained his superstar status, although he did make a comeback in 1983 with two hits, including “Avtaar”, a story of a father abandoned by his children. He released another 11 films the following year.

Later in the decade he moved into politics, contesting elections on a Congress Party ticket and becoming a Member of Parliament for New Delhi in the 1990s.

His later film roles were largely insignificant, although he shocked fans in 2008 when he did an intimate scene with then-unknown starlet Laila Khan in the film “Wafaa: A Deadly Love Story”.

Laila, suspected to have had links with banned terror groups, was killed along with her family members last year.

Criticised as too bold for Indian screens, Khanna nevertheless said he was proud of the role.

His last frail onscreen appearance was in his first television commercial for electric appliance company Havells.

Thank you Dawn for keeping Rajesh's memories alive. I have been mourning my favorite star's passing all weekend and reading up on every article I could on the web to revive those fond mere sapno ki rani and pyar deewana memories. I was overwhelmed to learn that the TV and newspaper media in Pakistan have given Rajesh such a tribute and coverage befitting one and the only superstar. I have never been to India and I was 10 when I started seeing Aradhana, Kati Patang and slew of this great movies in Tanzania. I now live in the US. To me he combined innocence, humility and true heart-touching acting that has not been since seen in any other actors. As he had said in a recent interview, he is saddened that films these days are based on synthetic and western platforms. Rajesh's movies reminded us of love and romance that existed in our ordinary lives. In each one of us, he reminded us of something about ourselves. Rajesh - you have given us many reasons to live over the years, and to sing those beautiful love-filled, heart-piercing songs. May God grant you a very special place in his abode.

One of the beauty about sub-continent is that despite of politicians who have been master of hatred, common people always felt connected through the common culture we all share and these artists has contributed greatly to bring people together. Just few days back when janab Mehdi hassan sahab passed away, there was so many fans in india who felt heart broken and now i can feel the same when Rajesh Khanna passed away. Rajesh Khanna was one of the best actor of Indian cinema and seeing so many comments from across the border doesn't surprise me. I think mission of these artists life is to make people smile and bring them together and they do that even after they are no more. RIP KAKA. You will always be remembered.

Point, that's why it was not a derisive comment, just a mild correction :-) Anyway, RIP Kaka, saw Anand even more emotionally on Sony Max yesterday. Just after "Kaheen door jab din dhal jaaye" he replies to Amitabh "Maaf karo Babumushai, par dukh baatne mein, mein thoda kanjoos hoon".

Sad thing about growing old is we see things falling apart which were once part of our lives. He was a fantasy hero of our age in the wonderful decade of 70’s. May his soul rest in peace!

what an awesome actor he (Rajesh Khanna) was. Acting came naturally to him and melodius songs were filmed on him. He saw his rise in 70s and his stardom was short lived and he took it to heart it appears and took to drinking; somehow he reminds me of our own Waheed Murad who became a star in mid sixties (romantic song rendition was his forte as well, and he was a romantic too), had a short stardom, and then he became self destructive when could not be as successful, and was found dead age 45; Khanna died age 69 although he was not the same star in 1980s How sad, but history teaches us something

Tam ji, Please learn to make difference between Pakistan and those who are enemies of Pakistan (such as Talibans and fundamental Muslims, Hafiz Saeed, Lal topic etc.). A great number of Pakistanis are not very different from you. We all are victim of terrorism, bad governance and lack of education. We love Indians.

One of my most vivid childhoold memory is watching first Hindi movie in a theater back in 1981. We went to Goa for a trip from mumbai and saw Rajesh Khanna's movie "Fifty-Fifty" with all my classmates. We used to sing songs from that movie during lunch break after returning from the trip. Thank you "Kaka" for all the entertainement!! RIP.

He was one of the finest stars of that time. Too many stars of Bollywood have died this last one year - Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor and now Rajesh Khanna. His two best movies were Anand and Safar-in both of which he died of blood cancer.

I really don't want to see the reference to the TV Havell ad in his biography. I felt pained to watch it and had to stop half way. I'd rather remember him from Anand. And I think he represented the secular side of the Indian film fraternity. He kept referencing humanity (Hindu Muslim Sikh Isaai) in his public utterances. And given how many other actors/actresses have not been so principled, I have respected Rajesh for it. He had a big ego which caused him heartbreak personally and professionally.

Language, religion, country or any other parameter can not discriminate the love. In fact love is most fundamental parameter which can bring the human race together. Hats off to my Pakistani brothers, sisters and news papers like Dawn for giving such a overwhelming and public tribute to the romantic superstar from the subcontinent.

Death brings us together .greatly moved by the sentiments expressed by pakistani fans. born in Pakistan gone in mumbai. 70 s hindi pictures brought the family together to watch and hear the melodies. todays hindi pictures sent sonic booms to shatter the glass windows and heart with hip swinging dance numbers. that is the difference. so khanna is remembered by many pakistani's .

Everyone talks about songs of Anand -- who composed the music? Not R. D. Burman, it was Salil Chowdhury - another Bengali. Salil Chowdhury was one and only one -- far ahead of his time. I am glad Bollywood ignored him. His Bengali modern songs are the best. He even wrote many of the songs himself. He also wrote the story and screenplay of 'Do Bigha Jamin'. Lata Mangeshkar picked Salil Chowdhury as one of her favorite. Anand owes much of its success to Salil's magic.
