ISLAMABAD: The pioneering work of Abdus Salam, Pakistan's only Nobel laureate, helped lead to the apparent discovery of the subatomic "God particle" last week. But the late physicist is no hero at home, where his name has been stricken from school textbooks.

Praise within Pakistan for Salam, who also guided the early stages of the country's nuclear program, faded decades ago as Muslim fundamentalists gained power. He belonged to the Ahmadi religious community, which has been persecuted by the government and targeted by militants who view its members as heretics.

Their plight — along with that of Pakistan's other religious minorities, such as Shia Muslims, Christians and Hindus — has deepened in recent years as hardline interpretations of Islam have gained ground and militants have stepped up attacks against groups they oppose.

Salam, a child prodigy born in 1926 in what was to become Pakistan after the partition of British-controlled India, won more than a dozen international prizes and honors. In 1979, he was co-winner of the Nobel Prize for his work on the so-called Standard Model of particle physics, which theorizes how fundamental forces govern the overall dynamics of the universe. He died in 1996.

Salam and Steven Weinberg, with whom he shared the Nobel Prize, independently predicted the existence of a subatomic particle now called the Higgs boson, named after a British physicist who theorised that it endowed other particles with mass, said Pervez Hoodbhoy, a Pakistani physicist who once worked with Salam. It is also known as the "God particle" because its existence is vitally important toward understanding the early evolution of the universe.

Physicists in Switzerland stoked worldwide excitement Wednesday when they announced they have all but proven the particle's existence. This was done using the world's largest atom smasher at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, or CERN, near Geneva.

"This would be a great vindication of Salam's work and the Standard Model as a whole," said Khurshid Hasanain, chairman of the physics department at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Salam wielded significant influence in Pakistan as the chief scientific adviser to the president, helping to set up the country's space agency and institute for nuclear science and technology. Salam also assisted in the early stages of Pakistan's effort to build a nuclear bomb, which it eventually tested in 1998.

Salam's life, along with the fate of the three million other Ahmadis in Pakistan, drastically changed in 1974 when parliament amended the constitution to declare that members of the community were not considered Muslims under Pakistani law.

Salam resigned from his government post in protest following the 1974 constitutional amendment and eventually moved to Europe to pursue his work. In Italy, he created a center for theoretical physics to help physicists from the developing world.

Although Pakistan's then-president, Gen. Zia ul-Haq, presented Salam with Pakistan's highest civilian honour after he won the Nobel Prize, the general response in the country was muted. The physicist was celebrated more enthusiastically by other nations, including India.

Despite his achievements, Salam's name appears in few textbooks and is rarely mentioned by Pakistani leaders or the media. By contrast, fellow Pakistani physicist A.Q. Khan, who played a key role in developing the country's nuclear bomb and later confessed to spreading nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya, is considered a national hero.

Officials at Quaid-i-Azam University had to cancel plans for Salam to lecture about his Nobel-winning theory when Islamist student activists threatened to break the physicist's legs, said his colleague Hoodbhoy.

"The way he has been treated is such a tragedy," said Hoodbhoy. "He went from someone who was revered in Pakistan, a national celebrity, to someone who could not set foot in Pakistan. If he came, he would be insulted and could be hurt or even killed."

The president who honoured Salam would later go on to intensify persecution of Ahmadis, for whom life in Pakistan has grown even more precarious.

"Many Ahmadis have received letters from fundamentalists since the 2010 attacks threatening to target them again, and the government isn't doing anything," said Qamar Suleiman, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community.

It is a must for every Pakistani to respect the scientific heroes, the country has ever produced. All great nations do the same in full spirit. I am counting eminent Pakistani scientists who worked abroad or in Pakistan. We should give some extra weightage to those scientists who worked in Pakistan and continuously challenged the red tapism and hurdles and made their way. The greatest scientist the country has produced should be listed as follows. 1) Dr. Abdus Salam (Physicist) 2) Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan (Metallurgist) 3) Dr. Atta ur Rahman (Organic Chemistry) 4) Dr. Samar Mubarik Mand (Nuclear Physicist) 5) Dr. Pervaiz Hoodhboy (Physicist)

A physicist, scientist, doctor etc. can be from any religion and this is not the benchmark of religion...............So Einstien is not famous due to his religion but his work.

Faith is a personal declaration of faith by an individual or a group. No one should be allowed to declare of group "muslim or non-Muslim" . Leave that decision up to God if you believe in his power and belive in his power to judge, you do not have to beleive what ahmedi's belief system is but you must respect their right to choose what and how they believe. Even if I accept your argument and "ahemdi's started it" I do not recall if they ever tried to force their belief system on any one else. I am ashamed of what a majority religious group is doing to minority group. Simply appauling. As for Dr Salam, he might not be getting the official recognition from Pakistani govt but I have never seen a single Pakistani who fails to admit his brilliance or appreciate the pride and honor he brought to Pakistan.

Who are you to decide? Its is between the person and his GOD, Allah. Others please stay out. Just because I call myself Muslim, you cannot harass me leave alone kill me or destroy my mosques (yes they are mosques) You may go to places of worship but Ahmedis go to Mosques and no one who is true muslim can deny their right.

It's very simple really. First, accept that real power lies with the people. 1 million military/para-military cannot subdue 180 million people if they refuse to accept less than their due. Forget about the army/judiciary/buraucracy/politicians improving things. they are part of the problem. Accept that these are all public servants who are paid to do certain work by the people through taxes. as with any servant, abuse of position should be checked, not pandered to. People must demand their right to good governance. Not treat it as a gift from these public servants. Their right. all it takes to do this is character. We all have it, but don't exercise it because those in positions they could never have dreamt of have been allowed to consolidate, and strong steps to wrest the initiative back where it belongs.

pakistanis do respect but not the government.. salam did his job, to leave the country was his choice and the government did his job. but he should not be hated on religion base. he was a hero but many sects assigned muslims by the the constitution hate him because he was ahmadi., this is wrong, he served pakistan and also a a part of nuclear mission. but here we and the government only name DR AQ Khan as hero and even not mention DR. ABDUSSAALM.

Countries are createdon eqality of human beings, not on race, creed , color or religion.Pakistan is doom to fail if it does not change its policy of discrimination which is part of its constitution. In fact Pakistans constitution contradict it self with basic rights it grants to its citizens whis is equal rights for its minoritis with majority.

Qadeer work was the same as rest of the politicians doing right now. Steling nuclear foot prints from Nederland, and then making millions exporting the nuclear reactors to N. Korea, Libya and Iran. He would have been in Guantamobay his crime but Musharraf saved him from this disgrace. If he was so innocent and brave, he should never apologized on the TV in front of whole nation.

There are certain basis on which a person is called Muslim. Of course, If a model, in physics is put forward by some, but experts in the physics find that it is violating the basic laws of physics, that model can't be accepted. If a person comes along with odd beliefs and claims to be a muslim, experts in Islam (Islamic jurists) find his beliefs not compatible with Islam, that person should not call himself Muslim. In Pakistan, if a ahmedi is calling himself ahmedi, we muslims don't have problem. But if he calls himelf muslim, of course, it is not accepted! I think every one knows, in the name of Islam, ahmedis are broadcasting their channels in many european and other countries. They even have websites, in the name of islam most renown with the name www.alislam.org/. Of course, these channels and websites creat the impression that ahmedis are following islam and they are muslims, which is not true. To summarize, if ahmedis don't claim themselves muslims, we have no problem with them.
Neeraj
July 11, 2012 9:25 am
But why does he have to be a Muslim to be acknowledged and respected, can't you respect every Pakistani irrespective of his faith if he brings glory to your country. This is the thing which bewilders us most. Today if you will ask in India, majority of youth want APJ Abdul kalam to be our president, don't care which religion he belongs, most importantly he is a patriot. You can be a great country only if you respect your country if not more than as same as your religion.

Interesting statistic: If you google AQ Khan for .pk sites there are a total of 66,000 results. Abdus salam gets less than 9,000 results on pakistani websites. Abdus Salam gets 500,000 results worldwide Vs 1,500,000 for AQ Khan. Three times Vs EIGHT times. Most of AQ Khan hits relate to his notoriety (Over a million!!) earned by selling/buying nuclear secrets, all of abdus salam hits are about his work. Shows how much respect he gets in his mother land. Poor man wanted to still be buried where he was not wanted. There is Yaum E Takbir but no Abdus Salam day. He had to establish his Institute in Trieste Italy since his own country did not want it. LUMS has been able to raise precious little in its six month long fund raising campaign for a chair in his name. There are two very important facilities in the world named after him but only three in his homeland. A nation is known by it's heroes, Pakistan chose AQ Khan, Hafiz saeed and Quadree over Abdus Salam."aithe Abdus Salm noon puchhdai koi nai" - Beghairat Brigade

Because people like you are in minority. If tomorrow your neighbour come and create havoc at your home, will you forget everything quickly and become cordial with him. War is another thing, you fight because you decided to fight, and moving with the time you try to forget and improve relations, it happens. But coming from behind and stabbing hurts a lot. It happened in Kargil, it happened in Mumbai. We are not against Pakistanis, but we are against a kind of psyche among large sections of people exist there. Hatred is a big business in Pakistan, you hate Ahmadis, you hate Shias, You hate Hindus, You hate America, you hate India. You hate lot many things, but we only hate terrorists and fundamentalism.

I am from Pakistan. I see the sub-continent as one community. I have extreme respect for Mr Bose. Just look in Widipedia and you will be stunned by his achievements , the respect that Einstein showered over him and their joint contributions to Physics. What saddened me the most that western media totally ignored him and did not mention even his name. Most of the people do not know what Boson stands for in the "Higgs Boson".

Thank you for the kind words, Virendra. You are absolutely correct that the thinking in Pakistan has been severely convoluted due to the confusion regarding the country’s identity. An excellent account of this confusion is presented in the report of the investigative commission headed by Justices Munir and Kayani published by the Government in 1954; Justice Munir was the Pakistan’s then Chief Justice and Justice Kayani was a judge of the Federal Court (now the Supreme Court). The entire report is available at: http://www.circleofpeaceonline.org/?p=119 This report identifies and refutes the ideologies of political Islam currently propagated by the likes of Hafiz Saeed, Taliban and al-Qaida. The silent majority your refer to has largely evaporated due to the intellectual confusion. My book Connivance by Silence (www.ConnivancebySilence.com) discusses how the continued silence by Muslims has empowered the radicals to become the self-appointed custodians of Islam. Prof. Salam was above this fray. I also agree with some of the other comments that Salam was a citizen of the sub-continent and rightfully honored by India after he received the Noble Prize.

I dont understand why people keep bringing this Ahmadi issue all the time and use it as a card against Pakistan's constitution. People need to do a lot of home work before they can eventually write on such sensitive topics. The fact is that it is Ahmadis who have considered other Muslims has non-muslims for years and it is part of their belief system that whoever doesn't belief in Mirza Ahmed is a non believer. Secondly, no one can take away the credit from Dr Salam and the great work he did which has influenced modern physicists. We as Pakistanis are proud to have a scientist like him but would the writer also like to write on Dr Qadeer Khan who played a reverse role, abondoned Europe and came back to Pakistan to help his then suffering poor nation. What is Qadeer Khan punished for? He's neither Ahmadi nor Shia nor does he belong to any other minority group! Who else could have been treated more badly than Dr Khan in this country?
