IT is being reported in the national media that Nato’s heavy trucks for its supply convoys to Afghanistan are causing serious damage to Pakistani roads, especially Karachi-Peshawar highway. Now we are negotiating re-opening the supply route.

It is also reported by the media that those countries which are interested in re-opening are convincing Pakistan that they would help in making the roads. Here we have a golden chance.

Since 1997, we are busy in constructing our motorways in Pakistan but in one and half decade we cover only Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Our myopic bureaucracy could not see that there are two more provinces.

But do we have some concrete for road infrastructure or we would as usual receive money, hire some politically-appointed contractors and waste the money in two to three years.

Our eastern neighbour has received $1 trillion for its road infrastructure for five years. They have completed two gigantic corridors; one East to West, which started from their Punjab to its western most state of Assam. The North-South corridor covers Ladakh to Kanya Kumari, the southern tip on Indian Ocean.

We must take a look at our faulty economic policies in the region. Our condition is like Rip Van Winkle who woke up from his two-decade slumber and found that everything was changed around him.

My wish is that US Corps of Engineers should be asked to build Karachi-Peshawar highway project. They built Kharian cantonment in 1954-58, the biggest garrison in Pakistan.

The big and positive change in the US came after its highway infrastructure was built.

Our eastern neighbour is following suit. Our media is only highlighting its military spending but not its economic evolution.

For a healthy competition and for our knowledge, our media should highlight what economic activities are taking place around us.

If we still can't build roads after 65 years of independence, how could we build a nation? We have done exceptionally well in producing corruption, bureaucracy, poverty, illiteracy and millitancy. We should focus on strengthening these existing institutions.

Difference between Pakistan and India is that when Pakistan asked US build Kharian cantonment in 1954-58, the biggest garrison in Pakistan, India asked US to build two Indian Institute of Technologies (IIT) (other 3 built by Russian, British and Germans). The IIT graduates went to US, became successful which led to out sourcing of IT and other jobs to India and thereby creating enormous number of jobs in India. What did Kharian Cantonment do for Pakistan except housing Pakistani officers and generals in style? Pakistan is paying the price of wrong priorities.

The recent history of the US should cause us to pause. Once you invite their money and military in, they will not leave until politically defeated at home. They were in Vietnam for 12+ years. They left the country in ruins with 3-million dead, environment destroyed (Agent Orange) and a country destroyed., We need to build our own roads and brindges. WE dont need the largesse of an already the most bloated miitary in the world to further fatten up our GHQ Generals.

Pak & its people seems to be extremely confused about their relationship with US nor is their military nor the civilian Govt. It is really pathetic.

I agree with Kunwar to have solid infrastructure of roads in all over Pakistan which is vital for strong economy but I will strongly oppose engaging US Army to do this job in Pakistan. There are other means that can be explored for making the roads without any red tape.

US Army Corp of Engineers do not have a magic wand to build a highway; they need MONEY. US is tall on ambitions but short on resources. Europeans are also too poor to fight a war. It is a lot cheaper for the US and NATO to bribe a few Generals and Politicians to get to use the battered Pakistani highways free of charge ... with Free Security thrown in for good measure.

People boasted of the motorway we built, and now asking the US to build a larger motorway. Do we now have anything in Pakistan to be proud of?

The best way should be that Pakistan should stop supporting "America's war on terror".
