Squadron Leader Muazzam Ali Khawar

Squadron-Leader-Muazzam-ali-Khawar_290

Squadron Leader Muazzam Ali Khawar was among the four Pakistan Air Force pilots who died in a fatal mid-air collision of two aircraft near the Rashkai area on Thursday. It was the sixth Pakistan Air Force crash in seven months and the second in a week, according to reports.

“You are star child,” I told him, referring to the textbook lesson Mr Noonari had taught in class that day.

As the English teacher paced about in the class, his prized orator picked up the book to read the master piece by Oscar Wilde. I instantly decided who my target would be. You see, the abridged version of “Star Child” describes, in detail, the features of cursed “star child.” It was such an apt description of the commoner sitting in front of me (and the victim of my poking) that we instantly, collectively, decided it would be a suitable pseudonym for Muazzam Ali Khawar.

In schools such as the PAF College Sargodha, you can only plan so far as the next day. You don’t know if the person sitting next to you, your dorm-mate, your roommate, your table tennis partner, your bench-mate, will be with you for a few months, years or may be decades. Fortunately, people rarely think in terms of the future. With his average appearance, curly hair, humble background and government-school education, I perceived, Muazzam to be a loner. It took me 18 years to realise I was wrong.

The brick-paved pathway, which began from the mosque, ran through the hockey fields before ending at Sabre House. Muazzam was a proud Sabrite and stuck to house motto in true spirit. The motto “Never Give In” was from Sir Winston Churchill’s famous speech at Harrow School, in October 1941. The determination, Churchill wanted to instill in the youngest imperial flag-bearer had somehow transcended to Muazzam, who belonged to the southern Punjab town of Layyah.  Once we moved out of the mosque after the Maghrib prayer, he managed to get hold of me for humiliating him in the morning. I was alone at that time and my clan had disappeared. Before his fist could leave a mark, as permanent as my words had left on his heart, Mr Patni, the Islamic Studies teacher appeared out of nowhere and brokered peace between us. What started at the mosque, ended before the pathway could end. Passing across the Sabre house, we hugged each other. Like a good mission school student, I resolved in my heart to avenge and like a typical government school student, he decided to forgive and forget.

In the years that followed, Muazzam’s story moved as that of Star Child. He graduated with flying colours, managed to become a wonderful pilot and to top it all, an admirable human being.

After a decade of knowing each other, we had become close friends. Every now and then I would give him a call. A favor here and a call there and he always complied with deliberation. I once reminded him, how I ridiculed him in the college and he said he did not remember it at all. My instincts told me he did. Only, he was a better and refined gentleman, who would not tread on the path that could lead to emotional hurt.

On hearing about the crash, I called his home, the phone line was busy. After an hour, somebody answered the phone. Instantly, I asked, “When is the funeral?” And before I could realise it was too soon, a shrieking voice replied: “puttar meray kol janazay da kee puchna?” (Son, why are you asking me about the funeral?). I shouldn’t have asked his mother. Two weeks ago, when he was visiting his family, he told them that if anything happened to him, the authorities should name an airport after him. His insight never bluffed him.

The last salute – Squadron Leader Muazzam Ali Khawar is laid to rest.

Shahjee, death is a cruel phenomenon and it does shock us all by sudden arrival and creating such horrible vacumes in our lives. It leaves us stunned and sometimes extremely sad and frustrated and often we do react the way we do. While I sympathize with you for your this sense of personal loss and tragedy, but I fail to apreciate this outburst. Accidents do happen and during training this is neither first nor last and not unique to our circumstances and there just can't be a 100 per cent safe missions for Airforce Pilots anywhere. Of all people you must be knowing or should be that our aircrafts might be old but in top working condition and this tragic accident is not due to the age of our aircrafts and most of the times accidents especially such as these are due to some human errors. As far as what you or any other soldier is doing for us, look, we do appreciate it and pay, through our noses, for your services in addition to greatly honouring it. I'm sure that you do appreciate the wonderful and nice perks and (sense) pelfs we provide and what it costs us. Just a reminder that your nations loves you and we go far beyond our means to keep you as best as possible.

@Syed Shah. Today I read in paper that bullet proof vehicles worth PKR 600 million (60 crores) have been purchased for VIPs... This includes governors, federal ministers, speakers of assemblies... and also armed services generals... Even the foreign minister is using a bullet proof vehicle as she is threatened by militants... WE ARE NOT A POOR COUNTRY. If they can buy those vehicles they can provide the defenders of the country with proper equipment. Our system is a corrupt one and it will not run for long any more...

It is my intuition rather a scientific assumption that it may not be a natural happening; it may have potential reason that increased number of air accidents are taking place in Pakistan alone; we are a country where lot of illegal infiltration and secret agencies are present; science has progressed at unexpected rate and secrecy. these all agencies have a centered objective to ruin this state; evidences have been gathered about involvement of said agencies in Pakistan. Devices may might have developed especially by US to influence aircraft electronic system and other software and even hardware as well, magnetism field induction is an example for instance; ceasing the vital software in the air craft.....India and USA have these apparatus; even certain waves can be used to confuse aircraft software; even hydraulic system can be high jacked like Iranian experts high jacked US drone by same type of apparatus; maintenance and aircraft life may also be a factor to this loss and shameful scenario etc etc. The Pakistan Air Force and Navy must establish their investigation based on above said and or relevant factors and assumptions to dig out the very reason about present increased air accidents.

i am a retired wing commander from indian airforce. it is very sad you lost four young pilots. we share the grief. when an air accident occurs it receives wide publicity . all people start talking about the cost of aircraft, cost of training, cost of maintenace and replacement etc. there is hue and cry. but come back to the ground from the Air. how many accidents takes place in the roads. how many people die and the worst become maimed. they are much much more than the air accidents. it is very alarming. but no hue and cry. ignored, forgotten, no remedial follow up actions. An aircraft consits of manny many systems. miles of wiring inside. hydraulic, electrical, electornic, pneumatic, electro pnumatic , computerisation etc. Any one can fail at any time irrespective the fact whether they are new or old. There can be human error on the ground and as well as in the Air. . whether apilot is hoghly trained or newly trained every one can commit error. added to this environment factors like weather packing up, sudden clouds, over confidence, under confidence, fear, etc can contribute to accidents. when people come to work they come with their worries. their mind is disturbed. when the nation is doing badly, when the politicians are in looting spree how can a pilot alone can keep his mind cool . when there is multitude of civil disturbances such as continued killings, bomb blasts, sectarian killings how can the pilot alone keep cool. he is the product of environment . what happens to others will also happen to him. These are facts of life. let us accept it. let us pray to god for these brave young generation Wing commander R. balachandran ( r ) chennai 9841048839

Sigh!! There's no end to our Pakistaniat, is there? We just cannot fathom the impact this loss must've had on the bereaved familes; instead of offering condolences and prayers, we merely have the guts to criticize and badmouth. My humble request to everyone who reads this - please pray to Allah for blessing the families with patience to bear this unbelievable loss. If you have anything else to say, maintaining silence is a much better option than an outrightly blatant critique on how the author's English writing skills are, or assuming what his intentions might've been behind this very touching anecdotal recollection. My prayers and condolences are with the family, Mr. Miraj and every single one of Sqd Ldr Muazzam's friends. May Allah guide us all.

People like you are bittier. Maybe trired your luck to get in, couldn't get selected and now have an axe to grind. There you are and not let the opportunity go by to malign someone and somebody for your failures in life. There have been occassions in US, France and UK of the airplane collissions, so I guess we can blame the upper management in those countries for that as well. Try to stay objective and not view everything with your myopic analysis. Even better stay quiet and not even comment.

REALLY?? When was the last time either one of you spent a day out in the field in the hot summer months of Cholistan or the tents up in Siachien or for that matter in FATA. Why don't you do that for one day and then come back and I'll guarantee you the benefits that irk you so much. Nothing is more imprtant than a human life and people who step forward to even scarifice that for the defence of their motherland should be honored and not castigated. As for "good for nothing" comment time to take a good look in the mirror.

M just shocked to see the sorry state of affairs about the depth of knowledge of people around PAF.You are asking whats wrong there for so many crashes.Just let me tell you that these all heroes risk their lives flying the oldest aircraft like Mirages, T-37s etc and fly with passion.I have served with Sir Moazzam and he loved to fly T-37s (The Tweet). He like others never complained how old that aircraft was but always enjoyed flying. PAF is working hard to keep all these aircraft in good shape even though their spare support has almost died down. You claim to pay up for these soldiers from your pocket but you never honor their courage of flying in face of danger only for you people. Now you will ask why PAF is still flying those aircraft which are dated back to 1960s...The answer is simple...This nation can not afford to have brand new aircraft like India's 126 MMRCA's one because it costs lots of foreign exchange which a poor nation like us can not afford..People like Sir Moazzam and counting have scarified their lives but the sorry state of affairs is that we are miser enough to value our heroes.bdw let me mention here that even India has lost more than 7 aircraft this year and those included some brand new aircraft too.Aviation is a risky business.

with due respect sir, this is far easy to write blogs while sitting in your comfortable rooms and considering "Good for Nothing Military". Before placing your comments you must have an insight of an organization or else keep your valuable comments reserved. I bet those who speak about supporting the military out of their taxes cannot bare a single day of those hardships which our men in uniform suffer. Sir you may not be knowing but about 40% of the tax recovery over the salary is from armed forces themselves. It requires courage, motivation and above all the love of the motherland to serve at places like SIACHIN for the salary which might be a tiny proportion of the salaries of such bloggers. Please remember that by contributing in the taxes ourselves, we are no more servant to you but the country for which we are ready to sacrifice our lives. If you are so bothered for your tiny little contribution, either bow to your adversary once and for all or before making any comments in future, make a comparison of what they are providing to their military and what you are contributing. Else avoid making sweeping and silly statements. Thanks. Another Pakistani

What a tragedy. My heart felt condolences to the families and may Allah rest the souls in peace of the departed ones Amen.Mid air collisions are rare and need to be investigated thoroughly. I have great respect for the people who put their lives on line for the country but calling them "Shaheeds' is a bit out of line especially when they are training and on non-combat missions. To be shaheed is a very sacred honour in my opinion and lately there is a tendency to use it too loosely.

PAF has always outshine both in front and in peace. The euphoria of 65 war, helping syrian, shooting russian plane in afghanistan back in 80's. PAF has tremendous marvels achieved under it's belt. But now i think PAF is deteriorating too like every institute of our beloved country. From the crash of jf-17 late last year (the time when we were having superb run of the show at dubai air show , in our homeland jf-17 crashes with most competent pilot in it - curious) , till now , we have to find out the main causes. I hope we can save a little bit pride if we have any if we can save PAF.

PAF has lost fine young men,we pray for their souls and share the loss faced by families.MAY ALLAH (SWT) accept our humble prayers and bless the families with "SABIR" patience and departed souls a place in HIS heaven, AMIN. WE must never forget small or big, slow or fast aeroplane kills when you are not ahead of the machine. We saw many young pilots getting killed because they thought it is now or never, but forgot there will be next mission to do better than the opponent. No doubt a machine can be replaced at cost but Pilot is lost for ever leaving heart aches. WE must stress on our young men to train hard on the ground and in the air, protect life, give yourself a chance to do better next day, and be ready to give every thing when the REAL TIME COMES in war against our adversaries. PAF has glorious past of courge ,sacrifice and professionalism, hold firmly to those traditions.LOT can be said, but I still remeber what we heard as young pilots in fifties " there are OLD pilots and BOLD pilots but very few OLD & BLOD pilots "" FLY SAFELY, AGGRESSIVELY AND KNOW YOUR MACHINE AND LIMITS.ALLAH BE WITH YOU ALL WHO DARE.

We all share the grief and that too at such a loss. A pilot is an asset and it can not be made over night years of hard work and tough calls make them where they are. However, accountability is always there being a pilot my self a single incident of even a malfunction never goes unattaneded and thats the culture that has been created over a period of time. We all should feel proud of the culture that has been created in armed forces aviation of investigating to the last point. The fact is its not natural to fly and we are going against nature. If your in a machine it is bound to malfunction so we should not blame but ur question of what went worng is pertinent. Few are human errors and few are technical........ Where it falls is for the authorities to determine.

Mairaj's tributes and homage he paid to a " shaheed " friend deserve to be read with the spirit he wrote. Let us not indulge in judging the quality of obituary and picking fault with the selection of literary sentences of the writer. This is a moment tragedy , a shock we all suffered . A very painful time not only for the parents of the pilots who laid down their lives in the line of duty, but a moment of soul-searching for the Air Force and the nation as a whole. Let us pray for the departed souls and share grief of the bereaved families. May Allah grant them patience and make us a nation that has a shining trait of rediscovering itself after every tragedy it met in the past with a renewed determination. Being myself , a father of the Air Force pilot, was very much moved by reading this piece of obituary and express my heartfelt thanks to him . God bless you Mairaj and bless the departed souls and grant patience to the their families .

The sad state of existence is that Pakistan air force is over stretched and so is the Pakistan army. The upkeep of the aircraft is not happening since the early 1990s due to various reasons but mainly due to a corrupt top leadership. If people in Pakistan analyzed the lifestyle of the top Pakistani Generals they would stop complaining about the politicians ( who are far more corrupt but have a lesser impact to the economy due to the limited role that they have in controlling the finances). The reason for this crash is plane and simple. Lack of resources to maintain such an air force.

PAF F-7 are Chinese made variant of the Soviet Mig-21 which is a really old design (originally 1955) and in India known as the 'flying-coffin' as there have been many crashes of these in India too. Pakistan has 180 of these, and Pakistan even got a new batch from China of a updated version of it in 2002. From the picture in this article I am 100% sure it is a F-7. Plan is to replace these with the JF-17 by 2015 which is not soon enough. Only 12 JF-17 manufactured as yet as per Wikipedia.

PAF must get rid of all old planes. Policy makers must go beyond in arranging the LATEST Planes for PAF. GOVT must work with China, Russia, US, UK, France to make a deal of buying best planes. Also an independent commission must be formed to investigate all recent incident and provide the findings in order to FIX THE PROBLEMS PERMANENTANTLY
