The sectarian gulf between the Sunni Arabs and Shia Iranians runs deep. Recent reports suggest that Arabs, while being motivated by their abhorrence of the Shias, appear willing to support Israel in her not-so-covert plans to attack Iran.

Peter Cohan, writing in Forbes.com, reports that “Saudi Arabia’s rage against the Shias exceeds its dislike of its Jewish neighbors” so much so that Saudis are willing to provide Israel logistics support to attack Iran later in June. Other Arab states including Jordan and Egypt may also stand behind Israel’s foray into Iran.

It was only in November 2010 when WikiLeaks revealed that Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz was egging the American leadership to take out Iran’s nuclear programme. In April 2008, WikLeaks exposed US diplomatic cables in which the current Saudi Ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubair, told an American diplomat about King Abdullah's “frequent exhortations to the US to attack Iran and so put an end to its nuclear weapons program.” According to the leaked cables Ambassador al-Jubair, while referring to Iranians, asked Americans to “cut off the head of the snake”. The Saudis never denied making these comments and observed that they could not verify the veracity of these documents.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a whistle stop tour of the western capitols to win their support for an Israeli military foray into Iran. The American newspapers, such as New York Times, have willingly become cheerleaders encouraging Israel to follow through on its threats by publishing speculations about when and how Israel will or should attack Iran. In the past three months alone, the New York Times has published over 32 stories flirting with the idea of an Israeli attack on Iran.

While Israel’s loud threats against Iran are increasing by the day, the deafening silence of the Arab leadership on threats against Iran, a supposedly brotherly Muslim country, is also becoming hard to ignore. At the same time one is at loss to understand why Iran continues to antagonise the West who is concerned about Iran’s hard stance against Israel and her unqualified support for Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Over the past three decades Iran has taken a leading role in mobilising Muslims against Israel. However, while Iran has become a pariah for supporting the Arabs in the Arab-Israeli conflict, Arabs on the other hand continue to treat Shia Arabs and Iranians with contempt.

The brutal repression of Bahraini Shias, who are in majority, by the minority Sunni rulers was aided and abetted by the Saudi regime who sent the Saudi army (including retired non-commissioned soldiers from Pakistan) and heavy armaments across the causeway to help the Bahraini regime. Rulers in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia blamed Iran for the uprising by the majority Shias in Bahrain against the Khalifa and his clan who are Sunni Muslims. Similarly, Saudi Arabia continues to suppress Shias in the south and deprives them of the opportunity to practice their faith freely.

While Hamas has profited from the Iranian support over the years, it too is equally hostile to Shias living in Gaza. Earlier in January, armed men belonging to Hamas attacked Shias in a house in the Sheikh Zayyad neighbourhood (between Beit Lahia and Jabalya) who were commemorating Arbaeen, the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussain. The London-based Al-Hayat newspaper quoted a Gazan residence Rafik Hamad whose brother was tortured by Hamas. “The police said my brother was a heretic [Shia] and asked me to keep him at home and not let him out,” Al-Hayat quoted Hamad.

The sectarian strife is ever so obvious in the Arab-Israeli conflict where Sunni Arabs are distrustful of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which is dominated by Shia Arabs. A survey conducted in Lebanon by the Pew Research Center in 2010 revealed that while 94 per cent Lebanese Shias held a favourable view of Hezbollah, only 12 per cent of Sunni Lebanese felt the same way. Surprisingly, Christians in Lebanon were more responsive than the Sunnis to Hezbollah where one in five Lebanese Christians reported holding a favourable view of Hezbollah. Even as they faced off against a common nemesis, the Shias and Sunnis in Lebanon remained polarised along the sectarian lines.

The survey by Pew Research Center in 2010 revealed that despite Iran’s hardline stance against the West and its unreserved support for Palestinians, most Muslim respondents continued to hold an unfavourable view of Iran. Respondents in Pakistan and Indonesia were the only two exceptions where more than 50 per cent respondents held a favourable view of Iran. Most respondents in Egypt, Jordon, Lebanon, and Turkey reported an unfavourable view of Iran.

Thank you Mr. Vashisth for your opinion in regards to the 'responsible vs. irresponsible countries with especial emphasis you put on the Muslim countries. Yes sir, you are right the USA is a most responsible country and nation because they have unlimited god gifted resources that enables them to acquire the hi-techs in every fields of the world economy. As far as the discrimination concern in the Middle Eastern countries that is mainly related with their life styles and education. Definitely the well eduction system broadens up the mentality of the peoples and it ultimately brings awareness for their human rights and privileges. Also you complained the 'treatment' issues in the Muslim countries is nothing but just your narrow mentality. If we open up our heart with sincerity and expand our hands for friendship, I do believe no one will refuse or, dishearten you!

Its a war between righteous and evil. This war started 1400 years ago and still continues.I am glade old confusion are clearing up very rapidly. I can't wait for this war becouse its going to clear up lot more 1400 years old confusions! The powerful is the one who is righteous , and evil no matter how strong he can be will be defeated! History can not be ignored. If the west goes again the entire so called Muslim countries the west will win, but not against Iran. They tried during Iran-Iraq war did not they? did they win? NO! they did it against Saddam's Iraq in 3 days, Libya within weeks. YomKipur war lasted a week and these so called mulims bent over :) but the same country with support of the west and its modern tech failed to defeated a small group of Hezbollah who had Iranian blessings and logistic support . The Shia leaders of Iran will never even bent over because they are followers of Ali Ibne Abi Talib. The west needs to understand that its better to have a brave enemy then to have a coward friend.

i think USA is a responsible country, He know what to do . we go to US and find Jobs there and believe me they treat us like therir brothers. Their is no discrimination on the basis of religion. But in Arabian countries and most of the Muslim countries , non-muslims , even muslims from other countries are treated like animals. I really praise USA.

The British were able to annexe India because of infighting among Indian kings. For example, The Maratha assisted British against Tipu Sultan. The British finished off the Maratha rule later on. Hope that does not happen to the Arab world.

The data presented by the author on perceptions found in various Muslim majority countries show that of all the countries surveyed Pakistan is the least sectarian minded. This is a very heartening indeed!

the vietnam war ended up with more than a million deadand today USA trades with China with trillions in the deficit (is socialism better , there was no justification even then) and so did the war in iraq and before that the iran iraq war more than a million. just what are you trying to say bobby.millions --donot mean anything. iran on the other hand has documented its nuclear energy programe been under the aegis of IAEA for years now, is under camera is under inspections, is under sanctions when almost all intelligence agencies have concluded there is no nuclear weapon at all. There are 38 countries producing nuclear power and legal forums exists for monitoring. Whereas israel , india and Pakistan all US allies have produced nuclear weapons clandestinely. As for everybody wishing to migrate there what do you expect when the economies of the world are manipulated, currencies regulated..and the oasis of peace are only in europe and america where people can send that money home for their families in Latin american and Asia. Twenty years ago this state of affairs did not exist. the world has become smaller , shackled and straitened economically till a new equilibrium is restored. Every power has had its day in history when people wished to migrate there from Pharoah to modern times. Responsibility lies in Justice and restraint is in wisdom and knowledge.

Nobody become brothers because they have same relegion. You become brothers by your deed and respect for each other. I am very puzled to understand that why Iran who is not even neghbor of Iran is so scare of Iran? Mr Dilwar, Sir, it is not Israel who is threatning Iran but it is Iran who is threatening Israel and wish to wipe out its existance from earth. Same thing goes for USA which is 6000 miles away. From last 3o years they did not import OIL from Iran so we know they are not after their OIL. So now question to you is then Where do you think the problem is. Please for not only god sake but Allah sake also do not see every thing thru religion prism. If every nation take care of its own people and do not interfere others then world will become much better place to live. Regarding your claim about USA grabbing and stealing Arab OIL. Sir USA is buying Oil from Arab countries just like India and Pakistan. If they stop importing OIL these will end up in hell because that is THE only thing they have to sell and by the way It is Arab cortel (OAPEC)which fixes the price not USA or any other western country, Remember 1973 OAPEC OIL embargo. So, Please do not worried too much. Iran knows what world is expecting from it and better it understand it very well otherwise it will suffer due to choice it makes. World is now global village and no nation can progress in isolation. Mr. Indian Muslim, It is not just Shia or Sunni problem.

If USA is such a responsible country then why cant it employ its own people in a more dignified way rather than send troops everywhere to invade and keep the youth 'busy', as well if they were so organized then why every now and then they have to apologize to the world and muslims' at large; either when Quran is burned, or civilians are attacked everytime, or when they dint find any WMD's in Iraq or when later, may be they will not see a nucleur bomb in Iran!! Tell me, why are they quiet in the issue of Bahrain and making a big hue n cue for Syria? because they are the culprits and killers, n btw, no one is interested to come to US, and let them use their brains, that whenever Iran makes anything it announces because it is not guilty like the US AND THE ISRAELS who can have nucleur weapons, kill innocent people all aound the world with their NATO drone strikes, as if God gave them allowance to do so, but not Iran. Show me, in which ever country have they gone so much deeper and deeper to see every site of where weapons are made or nucleur related activities are going on except Iran?? Isn't this open hostitltiy as well as cowardliness???

we should not think who is shia or who is sunni. First of all we r muslims & we should protect our brothers wheather they r sunni or shia.we should be united to protect our existance from the enemy forever Israel & his supporter USA also.. If arabs hate Shias & support sunni then what they were doing at the time of iraq attack.. If arabs now are enjoying the Iran's problem then tomorrow it may be Iran who will be enjoying Arab's problem.. Moreover, we have to forget everything what happened between shias & sunnis.. Itz ok there is some problem in between us someyimes but we have to shorted out. & for the shake of shia sunni conflict we should not let our muslim brothers to be attacked by someone else like Jews Israel the main culprit and aggresive US to grab all oil properties of middle east & let them control all the middle east... In spite of i m a sunni indian muslim, i m worried about iran and all muslims also...

Nuclear weapon helped to end 2nd world war. Just think for a minute, Why USA accepted defeat in Vietnam and Korea but did not use nuclear arm to win. It could finish war in these countries in few days by using nuclear arsenal. Same thing is TRUE for Iraq and Afghanistan. USA is a responsible country

Then why the hue and cry about muslim nations being targeted by the united states? If the arab world is not worried about shias being slaughtered and are ungrateful to iran inspite of their commitment to the palestinian cause, they shouldn't complain when they themselves are bombed.

To sum up the whole article in one word-"Hypocracy."Muslims killing Muslims in the name of same Allah.Disgusting and shameful.Btw i dont support Iran on its nuclear program either, its president can't be trusted of nuclear arsenal's use. There should be a way to tackle him, but certainly violence is not the one.
