MUZAFFARABAD, Sept 30: Three people were killed and five others were wounded in Azad Kashmir on Monday in unprovoked Indian shelling from across the Line of Control after a long lull, police said.

The casualties occurred in two villages of Nakyal sector in the southern Kotli district, where shelling started at about 4 pm and continued for about 45 minutes during which the Indian troops used mortars and medium artillery.

Police said a 45-year old woman, identified as Naseeba Bibi, wife of Alam Hussain and a 10-year old boy, Saghir, son of Habib, were killed in their houses which were hit by shells in Jabbar Dabsi village. Another person, whose name could not be ascertained, was injured in the same village.

In the neighbouring Jandrot village, a construction worker, Abdullah, son of Bashir (resident of Sargodha) became the victim of shelling at the site of an educational institution and died on the spot.

Four other persons, including a woman, received injuries in this village, police said, adding that three of the injured were admitted to district headquarters hospital, Kotli.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a young girl, who was herding the cattle in Peer Klanjar village along the LoC in Nakyal sector accidentally ran over a landmine and was critically injured.
