GUJRANWALA, Oct 8: The entire staff of the General Post Office’s registry branch has been transferred in the fake and used stamps scam that was unearthed here at some local post offices last week.

The GPO senior postmaster issued the notification to this effect here on Monday.

A joint team of army and the Lahore GPO had raided city’s various post office branches and seized a number of fake and used stamps from the possession of postmasters and other staff. The GPO authorities suspended two postmasters and asked others to show cause.

According to reports, a gang of swindlers published fake stamps and supplied them to corrupt postal officials.

AUTOPSY: The body of a woman on Monday became a rolling stone between two civil hospitals for autopsy.

The woman of Baghbanpura had committed suicide after quarrelling with her husband. Her body which was initially taken to the DHQ Hospital for autopsy was referred to Kamoke DHQ Hospital as the female doctor was on leave. But the women medical officer at Kamoke reportedly refused to conduct the post-mortem on the plea that the deceased did not belong to her jurisdiction.

Later, the body was brought back to the DHQ Hospital. In the meantime, heirs of the deceased informed city tehsil Nazim Babu Javed who summoned the doctor on leave to conduct the post-mortem.

SACKED: The SSP on Monday sacked 11 policemen besides compulsorily retiring 10 others for corruption.

He also confiscated two years service of 15 policemen and one year service of 25 others for showing negligence.

KILLED: An assistant account officer was killed and a senior auditor wounded seriously on Monday in a road accident near the Sugar Mills Chowk, Rahwali.

Chaudhry Mushtaq and Rana Tanvir were going to Cantonment on motorcycle when they were hit by a speeding wagon. Mushtaq died on the spot while Tanvir suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to the local Civil Hospital in critical condition.

Cantonment police have registered a case against the absconding driver.

DSP DIES: DSP Raja Muhammad Mahboob died of cardiac arrest on Monday in Rawalpindi.

He was the younger brother of Lahore city SP Raja Muhammad Farooq Sajid. The deceased left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.

CAUGHT: At least 21 landlords and farmers were caught red-handed on Monday stealing canal water in Tetley village by a joint raiding team of irrigation officials and police.

Police have instituted a case and are investigating.

THIEVES ARRESTED: Five members of an inter-district gang of thieves were arrested with a huge quantity of stolen material, including transformers and cables, in Sitra town, Sialkot.

A Gepco spokesman said here on Monday that ring leader Sheikh Tariq, Rashid Ahmad, Liaquat Ali, Abdul Rashid and Aaus Muhammad had stolen equipment from stores of various Wapda sub-divisions in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Narowal and Sialkot.

The Gepco raiding team and the army caught them red-handed selling the stolen equipment to scrap dealers.

Sitra police have registered a case and are investigating.

Meanwhile, the raiding team also caught around 119 persons for power theft in the Hafizabad district during the last week.

WORKSHOP: A joint workshop of Unicef and the Punjab Social Welfare on Monday called for awareness among masses to eliminate child labour and encourage education.

Speaking on the occasion, Social Welfare Department director Ms Shahida Wahid said that children welfare centres were being set up at district level across the province for the rehabilitation of the disabled and illiterate children. These centres had also been equipped with computers, she added.
