KARACHI: Diwali celebrated

Published November 10, 2007

KARACHI, Nov 9: The minority Hindu community in the city, like everywhere else around the globe, celebrated their annual festival of lights — Diwali — on Friday.

Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama after completing a 14-year exile in the woods. Earthen lamps are lighted by the community members to celebrate the occasion.

Special prayer meetings were organized in all the city temples, with the central meeting being held at the Swami Narayan Temple on M.A. Jinnah Road in the evening.

Religious leaders in their sermons urged the audience to follow the teachings of Lord Rama and always support the truth and oppose evil.

Bhajans, religious songs, were sung and prayers were offered for the safety, security and prosperity of the country and community. Lunger (free food) was also distributed among the people.
