SWABI, March 27: Education is a key for eradication of honour killings and violence against women. These views were expressed by leaders of various political parties, local government representatives and members of a local jirga at a ceremony to watch the Mukha contest on Monday.

The contest has been organized by the Oxfam, which has been assisted by the Samajee Behbood Rabita Council in holding the event.

PPP-S leader and former Tehsil Swabi nazim Masood Jabar said the situation was changing rapidly because more and more girls were being educated.

A member of the Swabi Islahi Jirga, Fayaz Ali, said that the NGO had educated people about honour killings and it had already proved fruitful.

He said the problem was that people were sticking to outdated customs and traditions which paved the way for violence against women.

The Tehsil Swabi naib-nazim Shamsul Qamar said the tehsil government would extend its support to the welfare bodies to work for the empowerment of womenfolk.

Earlier, Oxfam provincial coordinator Ali Gohar briefed everybody about the holding of various programmes for the eradication of honour killings and violence against women which had already taken a big toll of lives.

The leaders of other political parties, jirga members and local government members also expressed their views.
