ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) notified on Wednesday a cumulative increase of about 93 paisa per unit for consumers of the Karachi Electric Supply Company for eight months (June 2012-January 2013) and ordered its recovery during the billing month of June.

The tariff increase on account of monthly fuel adjustment will not be applicable to domestic consumers using up to 50 units per month. Nepra had separately approved monthly fuel-based tariff adjustments in the past but the notifications had been put on hold because of a stay order of the Islamabad High Court.

Now that the stay order has been vacated by the court, Nepra has issued eight notifications for the period starting in June last year. Because of the approval of the tariff adjustments in one go, the net impact has been estimated at 93 paisa per unit. Under the notifications, the fuel-based tariff for the KESC has been increased by 17 paisa per unit for June 2012, followed by reductions of 7 paisa, 37 paisa and 40 paisa for July, August and September. For October, the tariff has been worked out at 35 paisa higher, followed by a 10 paisa increase for November, two paisa for December and Rs1.13 for January.

There is no ambiguity about whether very high inflation devastates society; but economists are not entirely sure how much influence high interest rates hold in controlling inflation.
